DVD works perfectly on PC, but sides get cut off with DVD player

I used DVD shrink to compress a DVD, then ImgBurn to burn it. For some reason, when I play the DVD on my TV (I tried 2 different DVD players), about 3 inches on the left and right sides are cut off. It's a 52" Toshiba HD TV. I checked the settings on the TV and everything is fine, even when I shrink the picture, the edges are still cut off. The source DVD that I copied it from works perfectly. They are both the same resolution too (720x480).

When they're both the exact same resolution, shouldn't they both fit perfectly? Why does the original fit, but not the backup?

 

I used DVDFab and the same thing occurs.

 

Try using FixVTS on the ripped files before using DVD Shrink.

Still doesn't work. I used DVD decrypter to copy the DVD to my HD, then FixVTS on the full DVD, then DVDShrink, then ImgBurn. I even tried on a CRT TV and PS2.

 

If the sides get cut off, this is usually a setting in the dvd
player. For example, in mine I can choose 4:3 Tv, 16:9 TV or
pan and scam. P&S will surely cut off the sides.

 

Woah....I just realized both my TVs cut off every (I think) DVD. You know how I said the original disc wasn't getting cut off? That was on the PC, but it's actually getting cut off on the TV too. I tried another movie, works fine on my PC, but top and sides get cut off on TV (doesn't matter how far I zoom out). The HD TV is a 52HMX85 Toshiba and the other is some Sony CRT. I tried 3 different DVD players, same thing.

Any idea why this happens? And my DVD player is set to 16x9 for the HDTV.

 

This is "overscan", right?

Here's 2 examples of how much it's cut.

For one (original, not backed up) movie, both TVs show only the area in the red box (approximately), and for another movie I tried, it's more like the green box. Different for every movie I think.

 

If it's not the dvd player, then it's possibly some setting in the TV.
Does it have different zoom modes? Have you tried them?

Not sure if's overscan or not. I didn't think digital TV's suffer in
same way as old analog CRT TV's did, but I could be wrong...

You say the sides are cut off, but does the picture fill the screen
top to bottom? For example, if the source avi was exactly 16*9, I would
expect the dvd to fit the screen perfectly.
If the source avi is even wider, what does the TV do?

 

I zoom out enough so that the movie is a tiny box in the center for the HDTV, and it's still cut. As I said in my other post, even original, non-backed up DVDs are also cut.

And I found out HDTVs do have overscan;
"It is common to see HDTV sets crop out text and station logos on HDTV programming. In response to different picture ratios, some broadcasters crop, magnify, or stretch the original video, further distorting the image a HDTV set may receive"

 

At this point I would consult the TV manual,
and if info is not forthcoming, call the company
customer service line.

 

But it's not just for one TV, it's for BOTH of them. Could it be the DVD players?

 

Oh, I thought it was two dvd players and one TV you were talking
about. Beyond the dvd setting I mentioned earlier,
I can't think of anything else.

I would still call the TV customer service. It may be something they
have heard of before - nothing to lose.
