This should be pretty straight forward, but I can't even get my first backup done!

I am using the ripper version of X copy 3.2.1

I am trying Saving Private Ryan just Titleset1 and using compression.

I have ruined 2 DVD-R so far, same problem. It reads for an hour or so and then says insert blank media. Then I click start and after writing for about 10-15 seconds it says finalizing.... and ejects. Error writing DVD! Here is the log file:

    DVDXCopy Platinum 3.2.1

Well first off I'm not a conspiracy theory freak. I was using the same version for about 3 weeks after just using xcopyexpress that came with my drive. Then shortly after they lost there copyright law suit I noticed my backups would not work right. I checked some forums and they believed that when the program calls home 321 disable something so it would not work (maybe part of the settlement) and then you would have to get the RF version. Not to far fetched since the put some code on there backups that make it hard to copy (still trying to figure that out). Maybe just try some of the recommended software from here.

    EZduzit,
Have you tried the 321 forum's w/ this question. The burner probably does not like the Media you are using. This a quote from one of ScubaPete's post hopefully he will not mind me putting it here:

    ScubaPete's Answer:

1.* Cheap media skips and stutters, freezes, fuzzules, pixelats, palpitates, partially jams, partially rams, won’t play, won’t burn or won’t be accepted, may be rejected and even our old standby, refuses to be recognized. :-( (The preceding evokes LL)

Inexpensive media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !

    2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
Ritek G04's or Verbatim are what we’re looking for OR any media boasting “Advanced AZO Metal Dye”, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are a bit “pricey” they are acceptable.

Try what he says and if that fails the Use DVD Shrink and Nero to backup your DVD

Thanks for the thoughts so far. I have since successfully used DVD Dycryptor and then DVD Shrink to process and burn. Yeah! At least I know I can do it, but I spent some big bucks on X Copy and will not rest until I see it atleast work!

The media is Maxell DVD-R from Office Depot, maybe not the best, but certainly not a budget no name disc. Since I have successfully burned a disc now, I know it is not the Plextor and the disc is capable of taking a good compressed DVD-video file, so I figure it is X copy and the way it feels about the drive or media. In either case that would be unexceptable to me -- this is one of the best rated drives I could find.

I will check 321's site, but I do not expect a straight answer from them for some reason.

Somebody here has had to have seen this before -- any other thoughts on the ptential problem?

Why did you spend money for xcopy. decrypter and shrink are great. for that matter, you don't need decrypter unless shrink won't decrypt.

I did my research and did not want to "monkey around". I bought the best stuff I had reviewed. Plextor 708A Drive, DVD X COPY Platinum and Intervideo DVD Copy -- Money as no object, I just want to do it RIGHT and with the best quality. While I was waiting for my stuff to arrive I aquired Decrypter, Shrink, Smart Ripper and a few other tools for free. As great as Shrink is, it did not rank well in the head to head comparison with others. I may find that the quality with shrink is sufficient, but I am the type that wants the BEST result I can get.

Anyway, since I spent the money already it is mute -- I want it to work now!

    Thanks!

True that is not asking much, but sometimes you have to accept the fact that it won't work. Also even when I used Xcopy the only thing that worked was using xcopyexpress and just getting the movie. Anything other than that I was maybe 50/50 success rate.

I use x-copy platinum and have backed-up over 50 discs with it without 1 single coaster. All the backups are excellent with all the menus and features intact. I like shrink but have had nothing but problems with it. It crashes ALL the time when I change between the folders e.g main movie, menus e.t.c. I have made a cuple of backups with it but I must just be one of the lucky ones who seems to have no problem whatsoever with dvd x copy. **or unlucky as my shrink doesn't work so well depending on what way you look at it ;) **

Are you running any software that might be trying to access your drive while trying to copy/burn?

Some media players might try to tie up the drive and packet writing software like InCD, DLA and Drag to CD(?) will keep access to the drive and may be running in the background.

    Just a thought :)

Neph -- You were on the money. I uninstalled Interactual Player -- it turns out it is always accessing the drives checking for DVD Movies so it can open itself before you choose another program.

I am burning now, but 1) I have twice unsuccessfully tried to burn to 2 discs uncompressed. It burns the 1st disc and then never prompts for disc 2. It split at the correct place, but never prompts to write disc 2.

    2) I popped in the first disc that it did burn... the picture quality is better than the compressed Shrink creation, but it does this little micro "Freeze/Pause" every minute or couple minutes. Very annoying.

My thread is moving on to new subjects I suppose I will repost now -- The answer to the original thread is CONFLICTING SOFTWARE. Also confirmed by 321. They sent me a list of a dozen common conflicting programs:

    1. B's Clip: This package will load packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. It will need to be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs.

    2. Direct CD or Drag to Disk: These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. To properly disable either of them you need to select it from the Add/Remove Programs list, and select Modify. You should be able to disable it from there. Different versions of this program have different steps from this point for how to disable them, but it should be self-explanatory based on the onscreen prompts.

    3. GoBack: This is backup software that constantly runs in the background. This program will need to be disabled.

    4. DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, and others. DLA stands for Disk Letter Assignment. This package will load packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. It will need to be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs.

    5. InCD and Ahead InCD: These are packet writing softwares that come bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom, as well as some other Nero packages. This package will load packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. It will need to be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs.

    6. Interactual Player and PC Friendly Player: These programs are DVD software viewers that often come on DVD movie discs, and will try to install themselves every time you watch a movie on your computer. Both programs interfere with all 321 Studios software and should be uninstalled when found.

    7. Anti-Virus Software: Anti-virus software, while running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar.

    8. StopZilla: StopZilla can hinder required portions of our installer, causing the software to fail. Please completely disable StopZilla, then install our software. Once our software is installed, you may safely enable it again. If you have any difficulty using our software at a later time, you may need to disable StopZilla before going to use our software.

    9. MyStorageGuard: This backup software can hinder certain required files from being copied during the installation. Please disable this program before installing our software, and have it disabled any time you go to use our software.

    10. Napster 2.0: This software includes some basic burning software that can cause burning problems if it is running. You will need to close this program completely before trying to use our software. In some rare cases, you will need to completely uninstall this package to attain full reliability, so if disabling does not solve your issue, please try uninstalling this software and try again.

    11. Easy CD Creator 4.x: Due to the age of this package, it is no longer updated by the authors. There are bugs present in this older system that will cause NUMEROUS problems on your machine, not just with our software. Please uninstall completely.

    12. NTI FileCD: This program has packet writing software installed with it. This package will load packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. It will need to be uninstalled from Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks again Neph for the thought.

Did you try reinstalling xcopy. i believe it say you should do that?

I posed Neph's thought to them (321) about conflicting software and in their response, they did not say anything about reinstall. I will try it though. Can't hurt.

EZduzit: I had the same problem when I first started it was Roxio & cheap media that screwed up things for me.Go for Ritek brand with G04 dye DVD-R.I like the white top printables but dont print I saw on another site that the laser burns better due to reflection off the underside of the white!maybee its b######t but no coasters after 112 burns. Also turn off your anti-virus during rip/read process. Cheers ispy

EZduzit, to correctly un-install 321s Xcopy software takes a bit more than add/remove or uninstall.

    1. GOTO add/ remove and remove platinum and rescue
    2. GOTO the platinum folder in the program files
IN Windows explorer.. c:/program files>321studios> Now delete the platinum folder
    3. Empty the recycle bin.
Reboot the pc 2 times, this will remove any residuals from memory.
This will do it, I'm ex 321studios tech support, I know.
