hey people ive been burning and ripping movies a while.... but today is the first time ive had a movie small enough to burn either in dvd5 or dvd9 format.... just wanted to know whats better... i assume 5 is... due to size... but this not always the case... please help....
@Skitzy DVD5 holds 4.38 gig - DVD9 holds 7.95 gig. So how big is the movie? DVD9 is better if you have a dual layer burner - most movies are big now a days and if larger 4.38 gig burn on a dvd9 for no compression and better quality. Dual discs are more expensive though and some players can be picky with them. If your don't have a dual layer burner and the movie is under 4.38 gig then dvd5 or if larger you will need to compress it w/ a prog like shrink, recode etc. You can keep the compression down by removing unnecessary audios, special features etc - more compression can mean lower quality. Or you can just rip and burn the main movie only.
thanks for the feedback.... i do have a dual layer burner (sony's DRU-810A) just dont have dual layer disc yet... but like i said this is the first time ive noticed in nero 7 i had the option of 5 or 9... and the first time ive had a movie small enough to choose between the two... so i was lost... i went ahead and burned with 5... so i guess since i dont have dual layer disc... ive been burning with 5 all along... and just didnt notice... right? lol..its funny... no matter how many movies i burn... i still learn something new everyday
ive been using dvd shrink for most all my movies... unless there encrypted... in which case i use dvd decrypter... i dont use dvd decrypter unless shrink doesnt work... in which case after using decrypter i tend to end up with a very large movie (too big for disc) so i then take it to nero recode (available with nero 7) not sure if previous versions have nero recode... but anyway in nero recode i choose burn at once with two passes... and ive been thoroughly impressed so far.. but getting back to the subject.. dvd shrink is why i never noticed the option of 5 and 9... because like you said... shrink is making them fit to disc... i see said the blind man
@Skitzy Shrink will do dvd9 too - just not as obvious as recode. In edit>preferences you can set it there. I only occasionally do dual layer - still to much $ for me! When you do try use decrypter - rip in iso then burn in iso mode picking the .mds file. And use verbatim dual layer media - make sure your firmware is up to date too. So am I - or at least I try to!
