I have tried to burn some dvds. The drive burns, but i cannot watch the dvd in any player. But it burns. Burning cds, the drive is perfect. I think the drive works perfectly, because it burns, but what could it be? A bad spindle?(nearly the first half of it worked perfectly), software problems?(i restore my laptop), firmware problems?(it has had the latest firmware for two months and worked great). Thank you for advance. I know you guys can help me.

my drive is a sont dw-p50a
my media is Memorex DVD+R 8x.

    What programs are you using?

What speed are you burning at? Always burn at 4x or slower

What do you have the final output size set at? Custom size the final output at 4300 that way it will stay away from the edges of the disc where the dye tends to be more flawed.

Memorex DVD+R 8x try better media. Memorex isnt the greatest of blank media.

The speed is 2x, because the drive is a 2x drive. I can burn data and video in dvd, but i cant play it. I have nero, roxio, dvd dercrypter and they stopped working with dvds. Nero only burns correctly when it wants, so i assume the discs in the spindle are damaged. I repeat, the dvd writer burns, but i cant watch or open the data in any palyer or in the drive itself. The size is ususally 4465 MB, but this has always been the average size since i started burning and i didnt have problems with the first spindle and the first 10 discs, approximately, of the second spindle. What you think?

Well the problem could be that you have nero and Roxio installed at the same time. You need to choose 1 or the other cause they conflict with each other. And if you have NERO InCD installed delete that as well. That also can cause conflics. But I would uninstall ROXIO and NERO and get a cleaning program that will clean all the software files out of your computer then reinstall whatever program you want to use. Roxio or NERO. I prefer NERO. You can download cleaning programs for the registery files etc for nero at the site. As of Roxio having that type of program to clean registery out I dont know go to the website and see if they have an uninstall cleaning program.

Also have you tried playing the backup disc in a home DVD player?

yeah, uninstall Roxio, google search for 'Roxio Zapper' to fully remove Roxio, then try doing a 'simulation burn' in Nero. when you go to hit 'burn' click on simulation burn. this will go thru the motions of a burn with a blank disc but doesn't write to the disc hence you don't waste any discs. this produces a logfile entry... then let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar. You can differentiate sections via this section divider "======*** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

I'm no expert, however, this is a Sony, which is a rebadged Liteon and capable of booktyping +r media? I believe plugo 14 can use Liteon's utility to change the booktype? I concur with the Memorex media, not a good choice.

    - the firmware's up to date BUT the date of that firmware i think is June last year.

    - your original disc is burnt too close to outer edge of the disc, if you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences

    - the copy is obviously burnt to outer edge too, see previous comment

    - i'd try some better quality media. I don't/won't use Philips media myself so have no personal experience with it, but i'd still try something better. as per mackdl you may be able to booktype the +R discs to 'dvd-rom' format, thus making them more compatible on standalone players but i've not yet found enough info on this as to whether this drive can booktype (otherwise known as bitsetting) or indeed whether this Sony drive is a rebadged Sony (i don't know if any laptop Sony drives are rebadged Lite-on's)

    - what's happened there ?

As you guys said, Memorex just put its name in the dvds manufactured by other companies. I checked discs from the first spindle and they had other media code (not Philips). I checked the philips media code in videohelp.com and it said it was a bad media. I guess ill try today with other media (TDK or something), which media do you recomend. Also i will do the dvd shrink think. Do you think this will fix it? Thank you!
