Hi all i'm new to the world of dvd burning and have just purchased a artec dvd burner and clone dvd. i run the dvd with shrink dvd to the hd then burn with clone dvd everything goes ok till i try to play it. the dvd will ONLY play in the dvd writer not in my standalone or on my computers dvd rom??? any help in this matter would be great as i can't afford the trial and error method any more!! thanx joe noble RM.
Hi, First things I'd suggest are burning slower or trying different media. If you burnt at 4x, try 2x. Ideally buy a DVD-RW or +RW, saves money on coasters. Cheers.
thanx for your reply i will try to burn slower but you said buy a dvd rw+ or rw-, well that is what i have just purchased, the ripped dvd's playback only on this device. any other device will not even recognise them. what is a coaster? thanx joe noble rm
A coaster is a disc that did not burn for what ever reason and can not be reused, so they are called coasters which you can only use them to put a can of beer on.....LOL _X_X_X_X_X_[small]Al[/small]
Hi, yeah, as Mrlovkim said, a coaster is a useless disc, which, if it only plays in your burner, you have made. I should have been clearer, I meant to buy a blank dvd, either the + or - version, depends on your burner specs, but this way, if it fails you can wipe it and start again. Hope you get sorted, I know it can be frustrating. Let us know if you need more help. cheers
Welcome to the forum my friend - Actually you have answered your own question - DVD RW's are meant for use in your PC. The vast majority of standalone DVD's don't play DVD RW's. They play either a DVD-R or a DVD+R - a single write DVD. You're probably OK with the way you're doing things, you just tried to play with the wrong media - Speaking of media - when burning DVD's the rules you had for CD's don't apply here - media plays a major role - buying the wrong media could be a waste of money - Let's take a look at DVD Backup media - Memorex is a good example as media goes, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. 4 different companies manufacture Memorex BTW and the quality varies widely as you might imagine. Easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can't be trusted - "Who's making your Memorex tonight ?" 1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, stutters, pixelats, partially jams, may be rejected and lest we forget, our old standby, giving you the old just, refuses to be recognized routine :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you'll get a "Cyclic Redundancy error" or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won't accept your "cheap" media :-( Another problem which "pops up" is a "*Power Calibration Error". This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media. *A "Power Calibration Error" can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn't usually the case. Trying to shut down your software and ejecting your DVD then restarting your program and re-inserting the same media recently cleaned has been known to help. Inexpensive media or even average media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way ! 2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction ! "Branded" Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we're looking for OR any media boasting "Advanced AZO Metal Dye", this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit "pricey" they are acceptable. Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc - Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap or even average discs and good copies from 3 Branded Verbatim discs or 3 "Branded" Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 "Cheapo's with no movie backup OR, the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ? Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don't work well for DVD backups. Even DataSafe G04's made by Ritek have been reported as inferior quality and are evoking that "Oh no, I shouldn't have gotten those." Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-( Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack of what we recommend that will settle it once and for all - Don't cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended - Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt. BTW, In an effort to clear the air, when I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to the way the manufacturer's cut the corners during the manufacture of the discs. And when I say "Branded" that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "Verbatim" on the disc itself. cheers, Pete
Your DVD player may not support DVD-RW or whatever your DVD format is. Read its manual and it should say clearly in there or you can search goole and find it. Sorry, i don't have a link with me, but if you go to the manufacturer's website, you will find it.
Thanx for the great response guys i have still had no luck with burning so far but i wont give up i have tryed dvd/r+ and still have the same problem, i shrink the dvd with dvd shrink then open clone dvd and run the hd to dvd option, select the folder where i shrank the dvd and click burn. this takes about 25 mins then it says it was sucsesfull!!! lies!!! the dvd is not recognised by and device but the one it was burned on. i can't get my head round this cos the sound and picture are top class but the dvd just is not recognisable by any other means, and i have tryed a lot of players. i will continue to burn to difrent media and try difrent software if anyone has any ideas please help cos i can't stop thinking about the problem and am going slightly insane sitting time after time through shrink and burn after shrink and burn.... you get the picture. thanx joe noble (royal marines)
Your DVD ROMs may not support DVD-Rs. Mine does not support DVD+Rs. Confirm that first. If your burned DVD-R can be view on your DVD-RW, that means it's a successful burn.
joe23rm: As for me I only buy and use the DVD+RWs as they save you money on coasters the DVD-RWs dont alwaye work in some stard alone players even thow they do play on your PC and yes they do cost a little more. Devil60 PPS dont bye DVDs on line _X_X_X_X_X_[small]=Once A Marine Always A Marine:= "From now until the end of the world, we and it shall be remembered. We few, we Band of Brothers. chinabee, I wrote that just above your post - Wasn't I clear ? You might actually want to read posts that answer the questions at hand before writing the same thing down - It kind of looks like you're not paying attention - Are you ? Devil60, ??? joe23rm , What media are you using Joe ? Is it one of the ones I recommended ? I took some time writing that post to you, is there anything there you didn't understand ? Before we can track down what your problem, we have to eliminate the most common causes. If you try one of the recommended brands of media and your problem continues, we can then try other things - if it is your media, then we'll just waste our time trying other things until you move up in quality - Can you tell us what media you're using? Pete
ScubaPete, apparently it's not clear. I wrote the same thing twice, but he didn't get it. I'll just write the third time: Check your DVD player and DVDROM compatibility first before you yell 'coasters!'
Yep I guess you HAD to say something as only 2hrs and 9mins went by and he said nothing to indicate he had trouble with my answer but then again, my telepathy isn't what it was when I was younger – Yet I forget, young teenagers feel the need to show the world they know everything – knowing that children need to always have the last word no matter how foolish it makes them look, I await your retort (that mean reply – didn’t want you to hurt yourself reaching for the dictionary, Heh, heh). cheers, Pete
22:13 -20:04 _____ 2:09 Looking at the post, yours came after mine, so you didn't post prior to me - on the same day (a No-brainer) a wild guess that you're in the same time zone, certainly not less time than - could be off by maybe 6 or 8 hours, sure - BUT, you didn't wait until joe23rm asked the question again, showing that in fact, he didn't read either post but still no excuse for you to assume I was too stupid to gotten my point across - You have your last shot coming, I told everyone about that last word thingie and how bright you are and all - Go gettem' there tiger - Sea Yaaaaaaaaaaa
Oh, I thought your article is a bit too long and a bit confusing to unexperienced guys. It would be better just spell it out, but ... I don't know. I hope he finds a good solution.
Devil60,I want to know why in tarnation not to buy dvd's on line. I buy ritekG04's all the time from Meritline for .69ea. /w free shipping. Why in blazes wouldn't I want to?
