Try the same disc with DVDDecrypter, ISO-> Read, ISO Write. Or use Nero to copy to your HD first, do not tick 'Quick Copy' and see if this solves your problem.

Yup, burning on the fly isn't recommended. Are you burning to a DL disc or is compression not needed? How fast are you burning and what brand media are you copying to, also make sure that your firmware is current.

You've just listed the sh!tlist of crap media....the only exception would be Sony if made in Japan. Give some Verbatims a try, your backups will only be as good as your media.

Glad you are having some success...

Don't burn under 4X, sometimes burning too slow is just as bad as burning too fast...the rule of thumb is half the rated speed of the media.

Really? I hadn't heard this before. I have a brand new drive in my sony vaio and I use verbatim dvd+r. I have been having problems with pixelation and skipping/stuttering. I know that this is either a problem with the burning of the dvd or the unpacking of the .rar files. The media is rated at 16x...so I guess I will try 8x now.

I burn my Verbatims on my BenQ at 12X and turn in quality scans of 97-98 percent regularly.

Do you ever have dvd copies on your computer which are compressed in the .rar format? If so...once the .iso is formed or before you unpack the .rar files...is there a way to make sure that everything is ok?

Now, I probably don't have a problem with the dvd image. When I mount the image and play it I don't seem to have the stuttering or the pixilation. It is only when I burn the movie and play it in my stand-alone. I will try two things:

    1. Burning at 8x instead of 1x with dvd decrypter and Imageburn.

    2. Changing the booktype setting.

We'll see how it goes I guess...

Folks here always talk about their 'Disc Quality Scans'. Unfortunately many burners do not support these tests.

Nero's CD-DVD Speed 'Transfer Rate' is as (if not more) important. This will show how easily the disc is read. If it looks clean with no dips it should be good.

These are graphs from a Sony DRU-820A burn with Taiyo Yuden TYG03. Nice Quality numbers (tested with a Lite-on) with very low PI (2.48) and PIF (0.00) errors.

One would assume a great burn, but how does this burn read (an NEC is used as the reader)?

Not too good, obviously the reader is struggling to read this 'high quality scan', TAIYO YUDEN is the best, disc.

Here's a Transfer Rate test of a 'junk media' CMC burn (same Sony burner tested in an NEC).

    No stuggles here, easily read.

Here's one of my Transfer Rate tests on 'junk' MBI ((Moser Baer India) 8X +R media (booktyped to DVD-ROM) and burned at it's rated speed.

I guess I could do a Quality Scan in my Benq which might turn up some poor numbers, but these discs play fine in a multitude of players with absolutley no problems. That's good enough for me.

I think you'll find the BenQ to be a superior scanning drive to the NEC...I too have a BenQ 1655 and NEC 3540 combo.

Feel free to post your scans and join the discussion here, we can incorporate the transfer scan as well if you wish:

And of what significance is that, especially in regards to how well burns play in various standalones?

My statement was made because of yours...

Unless your BenQ is a lesser quality rebadged drive...you would know that the BenQ would probably turn out higher numbers.

My ultimate test is playability in my standalones and others. No complaints as of yet either. I'm just wondering why you would come back at me with the response that you did if it is indeed..."good enough for you."

It's a Benq1640, supposedly the creme of the crop.

Higher.... meaning what? My whole post concerned player compatability based on Transfer Rate tests that any drive can perform. The Sony/Taiyo Yuden example showed good error scores but poor readability. Using a great reader for the tests is well and good for those who choose to watch their movies on their computer, but what does this say for standalone playability?

The 1640 is supposedly the cream of the crop, and as far as using a better scanning drive for the tests would reveal the fact that it produced a more accurate picture of what the disc quality really is...the NEC being only a decent scanner would produce results that may be misleading, showing either a higher/lower score than the actual condition of the disc is.

As I said before, my ultimate test is standalone playability and it's nice to be able to rerip too...I've never had any problems or complaints. We are really getting into semantics here and with the quality of the drives we both know the overall quality is going to be high because of the drives and the media that is used. The difference is going to be minimal at most. I wasn't trying to start a debate, but merely pointing out that the BenQ was a superior drive for the tests that you posted scans of, which you seemed to put down the quality of the BenQ drive. We all have our favorites.

I give up. I just had my Sony DW-D56A in my Vaio replaced (free under extended warranty thank god) and I'm still having problems. Not until about 70% thru the DVD however. I've tried different media...made changes to firmware....changed registry a bit...burned ad dvd-rom...tried everythign I can possibly find.

I give up...I'm buying an external burner and an external HD.
