I am new to this, but have made numerous backups that play on both the computer and the apex (i know it's a bad test) standalone. Originally i think that it took around 20 minutes to rip and encode a dvd9 with dvdsrink 3.0, but in the past few days, this has gone up to 57 minutes. Maybe I was wrong about the time before, but i don't think so. My current set up is pentium 2.6, Samsung Sd-616 16x dvd, Nec 1100 dvd+r, 512ram, ~40gig hd space. It used to be quicker to rip from the dvd rather than dvd which I thought meant that I was read speed limited, but now both are the same at ~55 minutes, and it doesn't matter if I am ripping one ar two at the same time. Did I mess up some setting? Is this normal? Thanks-sorry about the long post. Also, is there a guide somewhere that lists the settings for Nero 5.5? My backups work on my stuff, but I would like to give some to my brother and would like them to have the best chance of working ( i am currently using the defaults from the nero install). by the way, the above is with the computer restarted to clear any lingering processes, and nothing else running.
This *might* be the problem, I can't tell from what you told in your post but...the higher the compression level you select (you know, 10 highest 1 lowest), the longer it takes to rip your movie. On level 1 you can get it done anywhere from 10-20 minutes, level 9 takes up to 50, and I dunno about level 10. Check that out, if it's not the case I dunno.
Have a go ripping via dvd decrypter and see if it speeds up and import the files into dvd shrink (HD space dependent of course) then do your compressing etc...... This would backup that of that of what fr0dus stated...(which I agree with)..... Your pc specs are well fast enough so I cannot see that as being an attribute.... Have a look at http://www.chrismccann.co.uk for a simple Nero guide, I wrote this for version 5 using version 5.5.5.9.17 so it should help you sorting out settings etc.... BTW, alot of people have success with Nero, others have issues so just thought I would point that out....not implying that you will but it is a possibility..... Any q's just post.....
I think the problem is defently compression related which effects the time by the level of compression needed. The more compression you have, the longer it takes DVD Shrink to complete. Try DVD Decrypter like baabaa said and see if it makes a difference. If there is no diference in times, it is to do with your DVD drive and its read limit rate. Have ago and then post back with results dmr2232.
I defragged my hard drive and it went from 57 minutes to 35. Does this make sense? I doubt that it is is compression limited, since I am not changing anything from what I was doing before. I don't have Decrypter. I will try and download it and give it a go. I will try and do a disc that I did before as well to have a good comparison. What is real interesting is that there used to be difference beween my dvd-rom drive and my dvd+r drive (dvdrom much faster), and now there doesn't seem to be much difference. Thanks for the suggestions
Yes this does. Your HD must have been badly fragmented, which increased Shrinks times because it had dificulty writing the data to the HD logicaly. HDs are divided into logical blocks of data for faster access times. If the blocks of data are scattered, the time it takes to search or write is increased dramaticaly as in dmr2232s case.
Oh yes VERY GOOD point Koola..... The more crap already on a HD will definately have an influence on access times.... I think most of us overlook that and assume if we have around 10 Gb free, ot'll be OK..... Good savvy point that one......As Kool as Koola or should it be Colder....LOL
