Well, yesterday was my big day, i ripped my first DVD using DVDShrink. It all went fine but. I noticed that I could strip of the intro and aftertitles of my movie using re-author option. That would give me some extra quality so I dragged all the stuff I wanted on the re-author screen including all the menu's and subtitles I wanted. Now I burned it onto a RW just to test it and I found out that I lost my menu, it still goes trough it when I start the DVD but I can select it neither can I select a chapter. This makes sense, the original view in DVDsrink had a tree structure, the re-authored one a list, no nodes for menu. I gues that since I cut of parts of the start and end that all chapter starts have moved too. Is there any way to accomplish this using DVDshrink or should I use more compression and leave the re-author option alone ? TIA!
Reauthor is generally used for "movie only" backups of a DVD, where you remove the menues and everything else in order to maximize the space on the DVD-R being devoted to the movie. You can keep the menues using DVDShrink if you want to, however, by cutting out extra features (compressing them to still frames, which take up little space) and audio/subtitle streams until you are happy with the amount of compression being applied to the main title. Whether or not their will be a noticeable quality difference depends a lot on the length of the movie and the structure of the DVD (ie, how much stuff did you have to set to still frames and how much did you leave as regular video).
You lose all linkage and functionality between the manu and the movie when dragging to re-author. When it says re-author, it doesnt really mean it. Its just an easy way to cut down the shite on a movie. They are not expected to fix this with the next release of DVD Shrink
Well the new release of DVD Shrink is out and is called Nero Recode 2! Have a look and you will agree with me, actually the same guy was working for it. It is exactly like DVD Shrink but you can now remove extras and keep menus and you can also burn the disc using the NeroAPI. Guide is here: http://users.auth.gr/~ichatzim/recodedvd.htm
So, If I want to make backups but also cut stuff of the main movie, DVDShrink is not the app to use. What app is? Do I have to copy the whole DVD (re)create my own scene selector menu since I will cut of parts of the beginning also (therefor the start of every scene changes) and recode the movie again ?
By all means use DVD Shrink, but you cant keep your menu. Why do you need a menu, when its only a backup anyway.
If you are really set on keeping the menu but cutting out the extras, try CloneDVD. It does, however, have several major disadvantages compared to DVDShrink: 1) you have to PAY for it; 2) it does not allow the level of control over compression rates that you have with DVDShrink. There is a fully functioning 30-day demo you can try, head to the downloads section and check it out.
Do you guys know what's new with Nero Recode 2 over the original version Recode in Nero Ultra 6? Also does Recode decrypt like the Shrink does? Thanks.
