I currently have the EAH4870X2 and I do not know if I should get another card to put it in "quadfire." Will the 4890 or gtx 295 outperform the 4870x2 in quadfire?

A pair of GTX295's will be faster than a pair of 4870x2's
A pair of 4870x2's will be faster than a single GTX295.
    A Single 4870x2 will be faster than a 4890.

    Rough performance figures

    HD4890: 100%
    HD4870X2: 160-170%
    GTX295: 100-180%
    HD4870X4: 160-300%
    GTX295x2: 20-300%

Unless you use 2560x1600 (30" monitor only), Quad SLI or Quad Crossfire will not be necessary. I recommend the HD4870X2 (one of them), especially now the price has reduced. It offers more consistent performance than the GTX295 and is much better value for money.

The gTX295x2 configuration is nice, but costs far too much for it's performance vs the quadfire.

Get one 4870x2...When you get a game that can use more, then get yourself another one.

I disagree. With the HD5800 series looming in a few months time, it would be better to move on and upgrade if that situation arises, not add another X2.
