I have a few movies which would be great for my kids, except for a few brief scenes of things I don't want them to see (too scary, too violent, etc.)

I don't have any problem ripping the CD with DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter. Are there any tools that will let me take those ripped files and edit them? I'd probably only need to take a certain chapter and do something like "Copy everything from 0:00:00 to 0:24:30, then copy everything from 0:26:50 to 0:55:19", leaving out just a 2-minute chunk from the original. Then I'd like to burn everything back onto a DVD-R (including menus, chapters, special features, etc.) so that the resulting DVD-R is exactly like the original movie... but with those 2 minutes cut out.

I don't mind spending time learning the tools I need to - I just don't know what I need. Free tools would be great, but I'll spend a bit of money if I need to on this.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Try DVD Shrink (free program). Here's an oversimplified intro.:

Run Shrink, click 'reauthor' and 'dvd browser', go to and click the 'video_TS' folder of the movie, double click the respective titles shown to copy them over to the compilation window. Now go to the compilation window, highlight each title, right click mouse and select 'set start/end frames'. This would bring you to the editing window. Now you may use the slider or the chapter pointers to aid in editing the movie. When you're done, burn the final product with Nero or Decryter.

For details, consult the guides of this site.

    Happy DVD editing!

Thanks for the reply, scf_au. Yeah, I thought about doing that when I saw the "Reauthor" button on DVD Shrink. I thought maybe I could make two copies of the same chapter (one copy that goes from 0:00:00 to 0:24:30, and the other copy that goes from 0:26:50 to 0:55:19), and indeed it looks like that trick might work.

But DVDShrink warned me that I would lose all the DVD menu functions by doing that. Now granted I've never done this before, but don't you kind of NEED those things? Will we lose the ability to see the opening menu, jump to chapters, see special features, etc. if I do the reauthoring? What will the reauthored DVD do when I insert it - just start playing the movie with no menus or chapter lists?

I guess I was hoping for something that would leave the disk pretty much exactly the same (including special features and whatnot) but with a chunk taken out of one of the chapters.
