I just started to learn editing and have only done it while in avi format, until today I did not know it was possible to convert to a smaller file while maintaining a good quality picture. My question is what program is best for converting from avi to mpeg 2 and can I convert to mpeg2 before editing my videos so can can fit an entire tape onto my computer. As of right now I can only fit about a half hour...

One of the Better Programs for converting AVI to Mpeg-2 is "Tmpgenc" but it is a Little Slow, if you Faster encodeing then "MainConcept Encoder" is a Good One....

Yes you can edit Mpeg-2 files but you need to use a Native Mpeg editor because regular editors will re-encode the File which Ruins the quality and Takes up a Lot of Time....

A Good Mpeg editor is "Womble Mpeg2VCR" or if you want a freeware Mpeg-2 editor then maybe "Chopper XP" or "Mpeg2Cut" would work for you But they are Very limited and will Basicly only do Cuts and only on I Frames so the editing isn"t Frame accurate....

    Hey Minion,

I have a bunch of AVI files but TMPGEnc would not accept AVI. States format unsupported.

    WHat do I do now?

Well first make sure you have the Correct codecs Installed for these Files...If you do then Open up Tmpgenc and go to "Options" to "Enviromental Settings" to "VFAPI Plugins" and Raise the Priority of the "Direct Show File Reader" to "2" and then try Loading in the AVI files and it should work.....

If you experience that your Encoded Mpeg-2 files have no audio then it is because the audio in the AVI files is Not supported By Tmpgenc in which case you should Run the AVI files through this Tool Before encodeing in Tmpgenc...

    Thank you Minion,

I have reinstalled TMPEGenc to make it work with AVIs once again.

I not have an issue with quality being lower than I want it to be.
