I was just wondering how you guys edit Mpegs? Because I capture using the Happauge 250 in mpeg format which is pretty good, but the bundled software (Ulead dvd movie facory 2) does not let me edit the files. ALso my files are about 1:30 hrs long and 8gb big at max quality (the file size goes down when putting onto dvd via ulead). Can anyone help me find/recommend a good MPEG editor so that I can edit my home movies. I do have Pinnacle studio 9 but when i used it yesterday the quality went down hill. Thanks V Much.
I use either comskip or ShowAnalyzer to detect commercials, then Cuttermaran, videoReDo, or Womble mpeg-vcr to edit them out. You can also get comclean, which works with comskip to remove the commercials automatically.
I personally use VideoReDo. The only complaint I have with it is that it won't accept elementary streams as input so I have to mux them before editing. I've also used Womble MPEG-VCR and liked it as well (although I preferred VideoReDo's interface). VideoReDo and MPEG-VCR both have 30 day trials and Cutterman is free. IIRC Cutterman requires elementary streams, so you'd need a separate app to demux before using it (you could use DGIndex which is also free).
Hi, Thanks for the replies, I will give them all a try. Currently I'm trying Womble - Mpeg Video Wizard, which I find very useful as it cuts the Mpeg wherever I want without any extra re-encoding. But its a little expensive to buy, so i'm still looking around. I have just downloaded cutterman so I will try that when my free trial with Womble runs out. I looked at the PowerDirector website but its too expensive as all I want to do is edit without any of the fancy stuff. Vurbal, What do you mean when you say Cutterman requires elementary streams? Thanks for the suggestions,
What I mean by elementary streams is separate audio and video files. Typically an elementary video stream for MPEG-2 will have an extension of either MPV or M2V and for audio it will be MPA, AC3, or WAV depending on the encoding used.
