i have 2 xbox's that the eject button struggles to open the drive with. the thing that baffles me is that if i leave a disc in the drive it has no problem opening. anyone have any similar problems? O.. btw they are softmodded with ndure and have the latest t3ch xbmc as the dash, one has a wd 160 hdd and other is factory.

Irrelevant.. they both have samsung drives. It's a stock fault. Under the disk tray is a small drive belt.. It stretches over time so either leave a disk in all the time and start with the eject button (what I have done for 3+ years) or replace the belt. You can usually find belts that do a good job in scrap cd-rom drives. This is a peculiar fault pretty unique to all samsung drives, from dvd burners to cd-rom drives.. I think they are just cheap components to start with.

If you forget to leave a disk in there is a sure fire way to get the tray to open.. hit eject and give the case a couple of sharp taps with your fingertips about over the top middle of the drive. Then it will open ;)

Problem solved.. It's funny how many times that one came up in my time at llamma. We even found the exact part number from samsung for that belt.. they use the same one across all their drives...

Just for interests sake if anybody is interested,, What happens is this..

The belt starts to stretch and the power transfered to the spindle dropping mechanism is reduced. At a certain point it does not have enough oomph to break the magnetic grab of the jockey thing that lives in the top of the drive and clamps the disk to the spindle.. everything stops working and all you get is a straining noise and the tray clicking against it's lock points.. That's why leaving a disk in there is a seemingly magical cure.. If no disk it's obvious how a few taps on the top can also help to break the magnetic seal and allow everything to happen ;) After a real long time the belt can stretch to the point where it is struggling to even close the tray.. one of mine is there now, but as it's never been opened and all it ever needs is a helping nudge in the right direction I can't really be that bothered.. I leave a blank cd-r in the drive anyway. It's that long since it saw a game disk
