hi all, a few weeks ago i backed up all my files and re-installed xp home on my pc. now my pc freezes and locks after about ten minutes of every startup!! i have fully erased hdd in case of unknown viruses etc and everything seems fine until i install emule 0.47a. once installed everything seems hunky dory then out of the blue it just locks out all the time and i have to manually reset pc. i tried different versions but same thing happens!!! i have re-installed xp about 4 times in last week and it runs fine until emule hits the scene. any advice to sort this really annoying problem would be much appreciated, thanks in advance guys
Since it seems that eMule is causing your problems. I would get rid of it. Here a couple P2P alternatives that search the same P2P network as eMule. eDonkey ( has ads asking you to buy Pro version), eDonkey Lite (its a eDonkey client that has been stripped of all ads and is 100% clean and available at fslite.com), and Shareaza (100% clean, open source and connects to the eDonkey network (ed2k) and Gnutella (limewire, etc.) and Gnutella2 (its own private P2P network). I personally use Shareaza. Hope you have better luck with these than with eMule.
How much RAM do you have installed? Also, do you have a lot of start-up items and services that boot-up everytime? Having little RAM and having lots of start-up items/services could explain the freezing... Which site did you download eMule from? It's open source and some other site might have tampered with the installer and added soem unwanted software/components... Sites such as openwares.org somtimes repackage open source software with unwanted software (adware/foistware)... I would suggest to scan for adware/spyware/malware and viruses/trojans to see if that could factor in on the freezing...
thanks for the help guys,i have tried other software in the past but i always come back to emule as i think personally it is so easy to use with so much to choose from. i'll take a look at others tho. with regard to my startup i only have norton and messenger and pop up blocker which i had before any problems started and i downloaded emule setup from emule website. sorry my ram is 512ddr & p4 2ghz pcu. is it possible that a virus can still cause me problems even after a full reboot and full hdd format etc?? i'm thinking maybe buy a new hdd and re install again as i'm certain it's software related. any other idea's/suggestions would be appreciated. thanks for your time.
You got it from here, right? http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1 How many processes are currently running in memory? (Right-click on task bar and select [bold]Task Manager[/bold], click on the tab labeled: [bold]Processes[/bold]...on the bottom left of that window, it will display the number of processes you have running... Personally, I'm not a big fan of Norton, mostly because I find it too much of a resource hog and has been known to miss detecting viruses/trojans that other anti-virus apps pick up... Anyways, what software do you use for scanning/detecting spyware/adware/malware?
thanks again, yes i downloaded emule setup from the link you provided, i believe it's the official homepage. i have 33 processes running once booted, is this high?? i use xoftspy to search for spyware etc. i have always used norton in the past and always had emule too it just seems wierd that i get problems now! maybe i should just reinstall again and not use emule but it'll bug me that something's wrong somewhere. any other ideas? thanks again
Ill just say this again. Since emule searches the ed2k network, there are a number of clean (no viruses/spyware/etc.) P2P apps that also search the same network as emule. Theres eDonkey its what emules based off of. They offer a "basic" and "pro" version. Their the same except that the free one has a window asking you too upgrade to pro for $20. Other than that it is clean and is in essence the same as emule. Theres a "lite version" of eDonkey that is the exact same thing execept the "upgrade window" has been removed. Then theres Shareaza (my personal favorite) it searches the same network as emule but it also searches the Gnutella network ( think limewire) and its own network Gnutella2. Its also 100% and open-source. If you are interested in any of these P2P apps heres their links: Shareaza - shareaza.com eDonkey - edonkey2000.com eDonkey "lite" - fslite.com
I'm unfamiliar with Xoftspy... Perhaps, you can try the popular ones and see if they can pick up some nasties... thanks thugs, i'll give it a try and keep you posted on the results. i just hope i can find the root of this problem, it's doing my head in now. thanks also to peainapod, if all else fails i'll move onto edonkey or shareazaa network and hope my problem goes away. thanks guy's, keep you posted.
Hey good luck working everything out. Not to sound mean or anything but just to clear it up eDonkey/Shareaza use the same network as eMule. Thats really the reason I posted those specific P2P app's. And again best of luck working things out - PeaInAPod
