What type of disk were you trying to make with Nero? Ex Audio Cd, Data, Video?

If you were making a dvd (not data dvd) or Vcd these require a certain video type. If the media isn't in that type it will then encode the media into the proper format. Depending on your computer encoding can take anywhere from hours to days for you average size movie (2hrs).

I assume you were trying to make a VCD or SVCD from the AVI file? Nero has to "encode" the AVI to make it a MPEG file that is playable on your PC or DVD player. It does take a hour or so depending on the file length and your PC's CPU, memory, etc.
