My last post was apparently too complicated. Anyone in this forum know how to make a dvd that will play in any stand alone dvd player. If it is impossiable please say so. If not just point me in the right direction, I don't mind reading.

Do you mean how to make video-dvd? Or (s)vcd?
Normal stand alone dvd-player will play them... before you burn something to dvd, make sure you have right media (- or + blank dvd)

What do you want to burn?
    Other dvd, avi-file, image....?

I download xvid from the net.Convert it to mpeg4 with winavi. Burn it to disc with nero or roxio. It works in my player that is a player / recorder for dvd plus a vcr. It will not work in a 29 dollar stand alone dvd player that most people seam to have. I also have a tv with a dvd built in and it will not work with that either.

You could use WinAVI or FilmMachine to convert that .avi to dvd-format and then burn those files using Nero.
Then you can read it with most stand-alone DVD players.

I am doing exactly what you are saying with no results. I guess the conclusion is I am just unlucky with dvd players?

You burn those dvd-files to VIDEO_TS folder?
What dvd media do you use?
+ or - dvd? Does your 29 dollar stand alone dvd-player support it?
