There are a few things you can do to improve this problem. Firstly you need to check that the drive has the latest firmware - use a search tool or go to Phillips website. Also you might want to make sure that ASPI is properly installed on your system by downloading Force Aspi from here: http://www.clonecd.net/aspi.htm It's quite safe to install. Also make sure that all lead connections to the drive are not loose in any way (it does happen). Finally you might need to change the IDE cable connections but try the other options first.
I had one of those drives and they are older than dirt! It's like 3 to 4 years old. It only works with certain type DVD's and I think it only burns -r and rw DVD's. It's a first generation DVD burner that was available to the public. I had LOADS of trouble with mine. I bought a new one 4 or 5 months after I got that one.. No more troubles Matt Matt
