    Hi folks,

I am having problems burning anything to disc. It keeps giving me error code 04 09 90, which I can't find any specific info on myself. I have found general errors, where people suggest going into device manager and uninstalling ATAPI drivers, reboot and retry which has given inconsistent results. The discs aren't expensive, but I have used them for the past 2-3 years.

Also, this is not solely a Nero issue, but as it gives me the most in depth log I thought it best to post here. I have tried to burn converted movies through ConvertXtoDVD and I am given the same error code.

I have re-installed the fresh 'out of the box' VAIO Vista partition, and also done a bloat-ware free install of Vista.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Save the output from Nero to a hard disk folder.
    Burn the folder using Imgburn.
If the burn fails, get some known-to-be-reliable disks like 'Verbatim' or 'Taiyo Yuden' and repeat the burn.
Use a burning speed of 4x or half the maximum shown on the package.

Notwithstanding your past success, these are not top quality disks - and you can't troubleshoot the cause without eliminating the suspects.

    Hi attar,

    Thanks for your reply...

Bizzarly, using IMGBurn with a fresh (and cheapo) disc wih my converted .avi to DVD (.vob, etc) seems to work really well. I think it is supposed to be a 4x or 8x DVD burner (+ BluRay writer), but it seemed to burn at < x3...which I can live with as long as it burns at all.

I am also going to heed your advice regarding cheap media and will ditch my (ex-trusty) supermarket brand for a genuine brand.

Thank you for your help so far, I will let you know how things pan out. Odd that it burns in IMGBurn and not Nero or ConvertXtoDVD.

I don't believe Nero has used ATAPI since version 6.
Imgburn does not use them and I haven't had them installed in my (XP) machine for two years - I don't know about Vista.

Imgburn is arguably the best burning program around.

Nero failed again using some 16x DVD+R Sony with the same 04 09 90 error.

The laptop is only 3 or 4 months old, is it worth me sending it back to Sony/Dept store as it seems to be a true hardware error?

    Thanks,

Reset the burn speed in Nero to 4x.
If you can get Nero to burn at 4x on 'Verbatim' media - I would be happy with the laptop.

    Hi once again attar,

I have tried it at 4x and it has failed again, with the same errors. :(

You can check the 'Test Mode' box in Imgburn and (with a blank in the drive) test the laser.
If it doesn't fail in test mode and you can burn DVD's with it, then I don't think it's the hardware.

    Apparently IMGBurn won't run a test on a DVD+R?

    Hi attar,

Thanks again for keeping an eye on this thread...

I tried a DVD Data burn (with Nero, as the log appears more in depth compared to IMGBurn) using the Sony DVD+r's I bought the other day, and some Sony DVD-R's I bought today. The DVD-R's burned well (not at the advertised 8x (more like 2x), and the DVD+R's coastered.

Could it be that my drive has a particular dislike to the cheap disks I used (+R's) and the Sony branded +R's I used? Are these drives really that fickle?

Also, I am keeping my eyes peeled for the Verbatim discs, as these appear to be recommended by all.

    Thanks once again.

    QLN

Laptop burners are alleged to be fussier than the typical full size burner in a Tower.
For non-casual burning I would research a good external unit and leave the internal unit for playback - but I've never owned a Laptop, so don't quote me.
