My other computer (old &slow) keeps popping up an error saying it just recovered from a serious error. its not online so i dont send the error to microsoft and at times it will pop up 4-6 right in a row. this is what i get
    error signature: bccode1: 1000008e bcp1:c0000005 bcp2:f987afd0 bcp3:f854d7e0 bcp4: 5_1_2600 sp0.0 product 256_1
    technical info on error:
    cwindows/minidump/mini/21805-01.dmp
    c/docume~1/garlos/locals~1/tempwer1.tmp.dir00/sysdata.xml

any ideas at all? has been having memory errors pop up with shrink but if i do a restart they go away
    550 mhz
    xp pro
    186 sdram
i know it junk but still does what the kids want (3-6)

if error goes away with restarting windows than problem might be caused by lack of ram. 186meg is a bit tight for xp

Another thing you can do antech, if you haven't done it already...is go thru the list of services running in Pro...and shut off the ones you don't need. That will free up a considerable amount of resources on low ram computers.

Post back if you'd like a list of one's you may not need.

Was this a fresh install of XP or did you upgrade from a previous version of Windows?

the list would be great, i know there is stuff running i dont need. this was a fresh install. the main reason i dont want to buy sdram is its the same price as ddr, i could spend that on ram that can work in this computer. actually need to upgrade this one and give this to the kids its 6 yrs old.

Since you have a limited amount of ram on that system, this list should free up alot of resources. NOTE: This list includes the disabling of the theme's service, so you're only choice for themes would be the Classic theme. You don't have to disable it, but themes do take up memory...as does everything on the desktop, or running in the background.

Go to Start, Run, type in services.msc

Click on the Standard tab near the bottom of the window. To disable the services, double click on the icon, and on the first tab, you'll see a pull down menu with three choices. Automatic, Manual, and Disable.

    Disable the following:

    Alerter
    Clipbook
    Error Reporting Service
    Event Log
    Fast User Switching
    Help and Support
    IMAPI CD Burning
    Indexing Service
    Messenger
    Net Logon
    Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    Network DDE
    Network DDE DSDM
    Performance Logs and Alerts
    Portable Media Serial Number Service
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
    Remote Access Connection Manager
    Remote Desktop Help Session Maganer
    Remote Registry
    Routing and Remote Access
    Secondary Logon
    Smart Card*
    SSDP Discovery Service**
    System Event Notification
    System Restore Service***
    Task Scheduler
    TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
    Telnet
    Themes****
    Uninterruptible Power Supply
    Windows Time
    Wireless Zero Configuration*****

*unless you plan on using a Smart Card reader
** leave if you plan on using Universal Plug and Play devices
*** System Restore hogs way to much disk space in my opinion, disable to reserve those resources
**** disabling the Themes will leave you with the Windows Classic theme only. This will also disable things such as shadows under the mouse, pictures for folders...etc. (basically uses the Windows 98 classic look) and can free up to 5-10mb of system ram.
***** disable unless you're using wireless 802.11 technology

If the computer is a stand alone, and will not be connected to a network, there are other services you can disable as well.
