hey guys, i wanna thank you for the help you have given me in other areas, and yes, i am back yet again with another problem...... my brothers computer... was working fine except that whenever you would slightly bump the case, the computer would switch off.... you would then have to unplug it and replug it back in for it to turn on again... im guessing maybe a short in the mobo, but, somehow i tweaked the case a bit and it stopped shutting off. So that prob was solved, but about a week later, he turned on the comp and recieved an error message with details on the lines of uninstalling any new hardware (there wasnt any new hardware) and to run checks on the stability of the HDD...which i put in my pc and completely reformatted and then ran checks for corruptions....all tests passed and when plugged into my comp runs a whole new OS... which is and always has been XP pro. now....the error message still comes up... any suggestions guys?

if error only happens on his computer & not yours, try another ide cable. how many drives on that cable & what is the jumper configuration on the drive(s)? download & rum from the hd manufacturer a diagnostic program on the hd.

Ok, i have tried another ide cable and that did not do the trick...there is only one hdd on the ide1 cable. the hdd jumper configuration is set on master (no jumper at all). i will check the manufacturer and try to get a diagnostic program.

If thats ok with the admins........

is it a program or an actual umm (how do i put this?) [bold]thing?[/bold] because ive pretty much narrowed it down to a bad ide channel on the mobo because no matter what hdd i put in, it doesant even recognise the hdd or the cdrom...

it is a hardware problem as in the motherboard. sounds like a cold solder joint. which ide port is causing the problem. could either replace the motherboard or get a pci ide controller card.

hey guys i bought the pci ide controller card and i put it in. The post on the site i bought it from said to install the drivers before plugging in the card. i did so by plugging my brothers hdd into my computer then installing the drivers. Then i put my brothers hard drive and the card into my bros computer and im getting some different messages. First it says it cant find a hard drive. this is on the initial startup screen. I figured this would be correct since it probably wouldnt boot from the crd the first time... so i entered RAID setup where i cannot do didly. any help?

if the pci controller card is not special than put his rom drives on it & the hd on the secondary port on the motherboard. might be able to disable the primary port & reassign the secondary port as the primary

as i don't know what card you got so thought it might have something special on it. what does the card site faq have to say?? where you reloading windows from scratch or trying to load from existing windows?
