    Hello,
I recently got a new Dell laptop with DVD+R Dual Layer burner. I've successfully burned many DVD+R's using DVD Shrink (3.2) / Nero (6.6.0.3). However, I can not get a Dual Layer, DVD-9, to burn...using Ridata 8x DVD+R DL. By reviewing the log below, can anyone identify what they think my issue is here? I'd appreciate it!

This excerpt from the log would be my guess as to the problem, but I can't figure out what I need to do to make Nero recognize the full DL capacity...

    @Thorb
    Welcome to aD!
I'm thinking the error in your log that you pointed has to do with the layer break w/ dual layer media. A nero update may help - your several versions behind. Update to 6.6.0.18 - package 1 & 2 from here:
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

Your drive SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A is supported by Dell. A firmware update may help but I can't find any from Dell. If the drive is still under warranty using unsupported firmware would void the warranty. Since it's a recent lappy I'm guessing still under warranty.
So if the nero update doesn't do the trick try some Verbatim dl discs.
    Great quality!
Let us know how it goes - good, bad or otherwise!

    Thanks for the suggestion Binkie7.
I have updated Nero, however I am receiving the same error whenever I try to burn to a DVD DL. Any other ideas???

Here's my most recent excerpt from my log file, which is my best guess as the source of my problem...just don't know what to do about it...

    Thanks for any help!

No problem on the suggestion - to bad it didn't work:)
There were some early versions that didn't handle the layer break very well with some burners.
So next up - 2 more suggesions.
Still try the Verbatims - great quality discs and probably the best dual layer.
Try to burn with a different program like DVD Decrypter (free) - you can rip in iso then pick the .mds file and burn in iso mode.
If you need it here's a link:
    http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

Let us know how this 2nd batch goes!

No luck getting a firmware update from Dell on my drive SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A.

I have seen similar issue on another forum, and that person solved this same issue by uninstalling/reinstalling Roxio and Sonic software. I'm using Nero so I didn't think this applies, but I now noticed Sonic SW installed by Dell...

I will uninstall all Sonic SW and we'll see what happens...

Try that too esp if you don't use it. I didn't see any of the drivers in your log from Sonic/Roxio that normally conflict.
Here's a clean too also for Roxio - to get rid of 'remnants' after install:
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Why no luck? Dell said none or none is needed at this time?
I've heard their support can be a bit lacking in this department.

I always assumed that if you had a 8x disc then it would burn at any speed up to 8x?? Anybody ever come across this not being the case?

Uninstalling Sonic software did not help. However! I looked into my media and I really think I just need to get new DVD's. I'm using Ritek 8x DL DVD+R, and online, it does not say that it is compatable with 2.4x burners (which mine appears to be since it keeps trying to write at only 2.4 per the logs). Whereas, say, Verbatim's DL DVD's specifically say they burn from 2.4x - 8x. So....I will try different DVD's... and let you know.

As far as my fun with Dell...
Yea, Dell's online support (chat session) was quite painful to work with...anyway they said there are no newer firmware versions available. He even made a weak attempt to tell me that "they" recommend only using their pre-installed software and not Nero...ha.

Hey Binkie7...thanks so much for your help.

    Hi Thorb
LOL - good ole Dell - great tech support eh?
Your drive will only burn +r dl at 4x - so I would stick with the 2.4x even with the Verbs and see how it goes.
Firmware may have helped - instead you have some costly coasters - ouch!

Try the verbs and post back on how that goes - hopefully good news :)

just updating this old post of mine...for anybody that may have same problem in future.

It was indeed that the Ritek 8x would not record at 2.4x. Verbatim 2.4 DVD+R DL disks work fine.
