esata

    i have a seagate esata drive, it was working fine, but now it doesn't show up in my computer, but when i put the usb cable on it, it shows up fine, someone told me i might have to rename the drive, how do i do that?

    Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disc Management

    do i just give the esata drive a different drive letter?

    Yea, try that. Give it a drive letter such as Z for trying it out. Be sure its plugged into esata when you do it.

    when i have the esata plugged it, the drive never shows up, it's like it's not plugged in, but it shows up as soon as i put the usb in

    It looks like a problem with the esata connector on the drive or motherboard. Can you try a different esata cable or the drive in a different computer with esata? Or a different esata drive in your computer?

    i will unplug it from the motherboard and reattach it and see if that helps, it's just odd that it was working then it quit working

    Is the esata built into the mobo or an external/internal PCI card? If it is an external/internal PCI Card, I'd suggest reinstalling drivers to it. Check Device Manager for conflicts.

    the problem is fixed, i have to restart my computer for it to work, i read another forum that says vista is not hot swappable for e-sata to work, once i hook it up, i have to restart it for it to work, it works fine now, i guess they need an update for this soon

    I would guess that is more on the lines of, what is wrong with rebooting? I never could figure out why people are against that.

    people that have xp have had no problems with e-sata, they don't have to restart, they are hot swappaable for xp they should be hot swappable for vista, i have no problem with rebooting, since i only have one e-sata drive, but if i had multiples.......... that would suck
