Hello, I have a local gas station advertising "ethanol free gas". I had tried to research exactly what the positive effects of ethanol free gas are, i could not find anything. What is the positive side to ethanol free gas? And what would more efficient (more mpg's) $3.87 ethanol free gas or $3.77 regular unleaded. I know this isnt up AD's alley but there is alot of smart people on this forum and i thought it would be worth a shot. Thanks p.s. please do not bring in politics (against forum rules)
BTU content of ethanol free gas higher, therefore mpg is higher than ethanol/gas mix. Techically, per EPA, an oxygenated fuel is cleaner burning than non oxygenated compounds. Although chemical engineers say the same or better results can be made from reformulated gasolines without oxygenates (ehtanol added) . Also 3 way catalysts (converters) are very efficient at scrubbing exhaust gases that ading oxygenats may not improve emissions. Ethanol helps scavenge (emulsify) water into the gas, so car can "burn" the water in gas from filling stations. Minimal improvement in octane rating when adding ethanol. The making of ethanol from corn is a huge waste of agricultural resources and better put to use as food. That's what I hear From a former research chemist.
