I have computer running XP..runs fine with all connections as stand alone...when I connect ethernet for broadband to computer all is OK but as soon as I connect the ethernet cable to a broadband modem ADSL and satelite modems....the systems reboots as soon as they start communicating. After the computer restarts it gets back to desktop and then restarts again. It continually does this stuck in a loop but as soon as I remove the cable from the modem it restarts and works fine. (When it shutsdown there is a brief flash of the blue screen of death but I am unable to read it as it happens so fast)....any ideas...I gather the motherboard ethernet connection sort of shorting out somewhere????

    Thanks in advance peoples

That's extremely bizarre. Try another cable first. If no success, If you have another PC you can try, test it on that, clearly if the other PC has issues the fault is with the modem, if it doesn't, you have a faulty network adapter - typically ethernet ports are built into the motherboard - rather than replace the board, you should try buying a cheap PCI network card and using that instead. Also don't rule out a simple reinstall of your network driver in case it's corrupted.

Have tried different modems with same result, have redone network drivers still same problem, also different cables. Will try with a PCI adaptor and see. Thanks for the help, as you said really Bizarre.

You could also try running WinSockXP Fix, it fixes any corrupt registry entries for your network stack.

There's two ways to see what the BSOD says
right click on MY COMPUTER,left click on properties, left click ADVANCED TAB,at bottom click on SETTINGS in startup & recovery, under SYSTEM FAILURE untick Auto restart, reboot computer. next time BSOD appears system will not reboot

The other option if computer ever does a continual cycle go to safe mode,in the DOS select screen of options scroll to DISABLE Automatic Reboot

Sorry for taking so long to let you know what was happeining...If your still interested....the reboot was being caused by a corrupt firewall file (It was running AVG 8 full version)..everytime signal came in the firewall spat the dummy and just crashed the whole system....uninstalled and reinstalled it and everything just works OK again..thanks for your help guys
