Ethernet icon won't go away from notifcation area

Hello,

Have seen this problem come up on quite a few pc's of varying builds so I can't pin it down to anything in particular.

The network icon for the ethernet card in the notification area (by the clock) will not go away despite unchecking the box in it's properties "notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity", which should in theory remove the damn icon. I think I have only ever seen this with Ethernet cards, the option on wireless cards seems to work fine.

I have googled this but have come up with nothing. The only way I can get rid of it is to disable the connection, which is obviously not what I want to do. Ideally I want the icon to show when it is connected but to go away when it's not connected.
