my parents jsut bought a new sony kdf-55WF655 lcd tv wit HD built in. They were wondering what exactly do you need to get HD channels, because we have Directv and they tell us we need a new receiver cuz ours just has 2 composite outputs( so what receiver should we get), and also what stuff do you need( monthly subscription?, cables such as HDMI cable?).

so exactly what do we to go out and buy??

We dont have HDTV broadcasting in the UK, but im sure any decent receiver for the signal will do. Then simply connect via HDMI or Component cable to the monitor...

If your TV has a built in HDTV tuner you can get the off-air channels by hooking up an antenna. The direct TV feeds require a 3 LNBF dish and a HD reciever. There are several brands and models available. These will have at least a component output and some have DVI. Bear in mind if your TV is not HDCP compliant the DVI cable will not work. This will be a factor depending on the age of the TV. Check this before you by an expensive cable you can't use.
You may want to look at dishnetwork. They have just picked up 10 HD channels that belonged to VOOM. So they have the most channels available at this time.
