    Hey thanks guys,

How about this question, i am making back ups of all my dvd movies and i want the best quality, longest lasting way to do it. What program for making back ups of dvd's is the best these requirements i have( for example clonedvd, dvdshrink, Nero, dvddecrypter etc.) and what program shopuld i not use and why. Also what type of disc(verbatim, sony, memorex etc.) and what brand of disc should i not use and why. My main concern is that i want these backed up movies to last long and be able to play perfectly fine in my player and be durable. And anything else i should know aboutmaking quality backups i should know about?

    Here is my current situation:
I rip the movie with clonedvd into an iso that is dvd5 size(about 4.6 gigs) then i burn that iso to a memorex dvd-r that is 4.7 gigs with either nero express or clonedvd.

    i would appreciate Any suggestions.
    Thanks

Let me start off by saying that this is your first mistake, these discs are possibly the WORST you can buy, they are of poor quality and are too inconsistent in burns and have a high failure rate, my recommendation is Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Sony(made in Japan)

I would recommend AnyDVD to remove any copy protection and to back up you could go with Clone DVD2 both progs by slysoft but you are limited as to what you can do with Clone DVD2 so I would recommend Nero7 and then use NeroRecode to back up, having AnyDVD running in the background.

As far as I am aware Clone DVD2 is the latest.
As you can see by screenshot, Clone DVD is limited to what is shown and that 3 tasks, so I woud say it's limited to what it can do

yes i have but now seeing the screen shot of that, i have clonedvd3. the fake one :( . And that version doesnt let you choose the write speed.

For clonedvd2. Can you make iso images onto your hard drive. Then burn those iso images back onto dvd? or can you just pop in the original move and then click copy and then click in the blank disc and have it copied?
Also does it let you choose the size of the resulting iso, does it let you shrink the file and take out subtitles or features in the movie?

I still use DVDShrink on it's own (burn auto with Nero)- consistent results.

[bold]Best DVD ripper:[/bold] DVD Fab Decrypter.

Used to use DVD Decrypter but switched to Fab since DVD Decrypter is no longer supported or revised for the latest copyright encryption. Haven't found a movie that Fab couldn't handle.

    [bold]Best encoder/transcoder:[/bold] Nero Recode 2

This is a two horse race between Nero Recode and DVD Shrink. I have used them both and they are both very good programs. There is very little difference, but Recode is faster. I like Nero Recode 2, but you can't beat the price of DVD Shrink (free). Here is a link to a comparison:

    [bold]Best DVD Media[/bold]
I always use DVD+R Media Booktyped to DVD-ROM for highest compatiblity with Stand alone DVD players. My top 3 are:

    1-Verbatim
    2-Taiyo Yuden
3-Maxell High Grade - made in Japan

Have had terrible luck with Ritec Media.

Another question. this ones for alkohol. You said anydvd wasthird on your list for dvd rippers. Isnt clonedvd better for ripping? Anydvd is just for copy protections right?

    @ mikej3131

I don't think that anyone dis-likes CloneDVD2. It is just a burning program that has its limitations. Such as the file(s) must not be encrypted, be 4.38~GB in size and as has been pointed out, limited options.

Other than that, I like it for burning my back-ups. Just use decrypt program, process the folder into the desired file using DVD recoding program, select & burn. Maybe only a few less steps than using NERO but I am very comfortable with it.

It just clicked, CloneDVD2 is not a ripper. Just a burning program for un-encrypted data. What, exactly, is the program you are using to rip the disc?

So clonedvd can only be used for popping in the original dvd then clicking burn and once that is done, pop in the writable dvd and it writes to it. it cannot create iso images on your hard drive?

and if the files are encrypted, cant you use anydvd to run in the background to decrypt while clonedvd is runing and clonedvd wwill then work with encrypted movies?

Also does the original movie have to be 4.38 or the burned copy have to be 4.38? i was alil confused on what you meant?

What did you mean by this? im not understanding? can you explain in alil less technical more detailed terms please? sorry im an amature lol

    @mikej3131
Yes indeed. Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, Office Depot, Sam's Club does have/sell Verbatim "Advacned Azo or Datalife Plus". Advanced Azo or DataLife Plus is MCC or Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation's state-of-the-art dye technology. It is possibly one of the best and is on par with the famous Taiyo Yuden.

In addendum to Clonedvd, I never said I like it or dislike it. It's simply that I don't have the need/desire to only. For encoding movies, I used nothing else but DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP, and for transcoding movies, I used Nero Recode 2 "AA + HQSR".

*NOTE: no offense to AnyDVD users and I apologize if you think this sounds a little inappropriate, but I'm not putting down AnyDVD or anything. Of course, I'll definitely get/purchase/support AnyDVD when the time arise, but not now.

It is just my opinion only. I know a lot of members like and prefer AnyDVD, but it's just that I don't see any good reason for me to get it that's all. You/anybody can rate it as #1 in your opinion for the best rippers out there and I'm NOT going to argue with that.

I don't use AnyDVD and or plan to, unless DVDFAB Decrypter, DVD Decrypter, PgcEdit, PSL plugins, FixVTS and VobBlanker all gone and or can not rip future movies/dvds anymore.

What I'm saying is really simple and basic. Why would/should I get AnyDVD (retail) when DVDFAB Decrypter, which is totally FREE and it has worked and still rip any movies/dvds for me? Furthermore, I can simply use DVD Decrypter, PgcEdit + PSL plugins + FixVTS or VobBlanker to rip any movies/dvds flawlessly.

Best of lucks to all and cheers.

I rip with Shrink with Decrypter on auto burn . On some newer ones, I'll rip with DVDFab Decrypter first, then Shrink with Decrypter on auto burn. My media is Ty, Verbatim and Ritek. I am also one at this time that doesn't have the need for AnyDVD yet.
