im useing and old cd/dvd-r combo drive for my ps2 back ups right now. about three quarters of the time the backups do not come out like they should (either the ps2 doesn't read it or it freezes in game.) one, could this be my burner; and 2, if i was to buy a new drive would an external drive be a good choice and if so what is a good brand.

It may be your media. Those are issues with poor quality media/burned too fast/or combination of both.Whole lot of other things also like usb speed/multitasking/labels/etc

What brand name and model# is your dvd-rw drive?
What is the brand name/format/and speed rate of your blank media?
How fast did you burn them?
What programs do you use for those dvd backups?
Are these all game backups,or both game and movie backups?

External drives: Sony should have some good quality externals.Benq has the 1621/and plextor has some. Check out newegg.com for one of the best places to buy dvd drives.

Another option, which is the route I'd go if I had to go external: Buy a regular, quality internal IDE dvd drive like benq 1640/nec 3510/lite-on/plextor.Not the sata drives! Then buy the external enclosure to put them in so you can hook them up to usb 2.0. You can get the benq 1640 and the enclosure for around $75 total!
