what i am trying to do is connect my Virgin Media feed to external capture card & then to my Pc so i can then encode and upload.
i know how to do the encode & upload part the external capture card is the Noob
what i am looking for is a capture card that will not burst the bank balance something in the £25 to £40 range (assuming there is such a thing) also if i am not asking to much a little help on the finer points of external capture.
at the moment i use a Dvd recorder

If you want to connect cable to a tuner card, you need the ATI unit with the cablecard support. This is only available in USB (although it does come in an "Internal USB" version). AFAIK, this is the ONLY way to tune HD Cable, other than the few channels that are free OTA anyway.

It is $280-$300 depending on what vendor is selling it, and you will have to pay $1-$10 per month to the cable company in order to get the "cablecard" that goes inside of this tuner.
