Not sure if this is the right forum or not but i have a 120gb external maxtor hd that does not seem to want to work. It powers up and I hear a clicking noise.

    Any suggestions?
Can it be taken to a shop to have the files pulled?

The clicking noise is a sign that the disks/HD is shot. My recommendations are...
1)If this is critical data you have backed up PAY a company to recover it for you. If your local electronics store has a PC tech repair center don't go there, even though they may get your data theres a much higher risk of them screwing up.

2)If the files are easily replaced and your HD is still under warranty I would just contact the manufacturer. Tell them your problem, when you got the drive, ask for a RMA, etc.

3)If the data is critical but you can't afford professional data recovery then try this method. Not the best but if neither of the above 2 options helps you out this may do it.
