I was wondering which has better success at burning things. I just wanted to know before I go out and buy the wrong one. Is there a difference in their success rates?
Hi, both are equally good, internals are less expensive, but need to be installed, whereas external are more costly and just plug and play. This for a tower I presume. In a notebook, internals are very light duty and are for occassional use. Jo
My .02 The drive is the same. External drives are ATAPI or SATA drives that are put into an enclosure with a USB or Firewire interface. All other things being equal, A crappy internal drive will be a crappy external drive. Likewise, a quality internal drive will typically be a quality external drive. I believe that the native interface will consistently provide better performance than conversion, as conversion adds a potential point of failure/bottleneck. The quality of the enclosure components play a part in the quality of the solution.
I disagree. As dailun stated, connectivity, enclosure quality and power supply all play a big factor in the success of burning with externals. I know a moderator on here uses external drives, as well as internal drives, and does multiple burns at once (he's pretty hardcore, arf arf) and he's had no complaints. But he uses good equipment. I will always lean towards using internal drives as that's my preference; unless you're burning on a laptop, in which case, use an external.
Thank you all for the expert advice. My expierence has been that I have never had a problem with Pioneer, Liteon and LG external drives. Perhaps just good fortune Jo
