Hi: I’m new at DVD burning so I apologize for stupid comments in advance! I have an HP Notebook (p4, 2GHZ, xp with Service Pack 2 and all updates) with USB 1.1. I purchased an external DVD Writer so that I could use the firewire feature (no USB 2.0 ports). The Writer is a Sony DRX-800UL (16X, Dual Layer, etc). This is not an internal drive in a drive enclosure box. It is a standalone external unit. I updated the firmware today to KY06. The drive came with Nero Express. For media, I’m using: for CD’s: HP and Verbatim. For DVD:s: Maxell 8X +R and Maxell 8X-R. Here’s the problem: I can play back CD’s and DVD’s with the drive. I can burn CD’s on the drive, but I can’t burn DVD’s on the drive. The result is always the same: Nero reads the buffer then stalls during the lead-in phase, at 4% finished. It will sit at 4% until Ctrl-Alt-Delete (it sat at 4% for over an hour on my last try). The DVD is ruined and can’t be read in any DVD player. I’ve been using DVD Shrink 3.2 to rip the DVD files to my hard-drive without a problem. Therefore, I’m left to believe there must be a problem with either the media I am recording on or ____.????? The burner is new so I haven’t had any positive results yet. It passes Sony’s Drive Check program and Nero’s Speed Test program, Could the problem be incompatibility between Nero and Firewire? Nero and SP2? I've read in the forums about ATAPI problems but I don't know what this is or what to check. Thanks for any suggestions. I think your problem is the slow USB port.(1.1) Unfortunately, the only way to remedy this is a harware upgrade.(to 2.0) The MUCH slower 1.1 is likely unable to transfer the data quickly enough, unless you have several hours to kill. I've used a similar setup before & it took almost an hour for just a CD to burn with the 1.1. Considering the DVD will hold 7 times as much as a CD- well, do the math.
Your nero is out of date, current nero is 6.6.0.18. You aren't finalizing your disc, you can't expect to play a disc that's left open. I see that you are using Ritek, try something like Yuden or Verbs. Sony, fuji and maxell are good too. I don't think that the usb1 is that big of a prob since you're using firewire. You have INCD installed, that's Nero's packet writing software. DL Nero's cleantool. This will completly remove nero from your system. Now reinstall Nero this time w/o INCD.
