Hi Forum, Long time lurker, first time poster. Thank you in advance for your help. I am about to throw this HP writer out the window. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted registry keys, done everything I can think of, and I have almost had enough - please help. Hardware: External HP dvd420e DVD Writer Burning Program: Nero, Record Now etc Problem: The writer worked fine for a long time, however recently after installing Windows MP 11, and an update, xp just decided it didn't like the burner anymore. 1) It doesn't recognise the writer as an HP 2) It tries to install it as a generic cd rom and also installs a mass storage device in Device Manager when it "detects" it. 3) I can't update firmware, as HP says that there is no HP drive on the system. 4) I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, however they're like "orphan" drivers, as XP doesn't recognise the hardware as an HP. I don't really know what to do from here..... can anyone shed some light ? Thank you!!
You can read through the info in the following URL, but if nothing works, then follow the instructions to roll back to Windows Media Player 10 or 9. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx
Hi there Thanks for your response. I had actually uninstalled it to see if it would help, to no avail. I remove upper and lower filters from registry. Anyhow, I thought I would do a virus scan through an online one, although "I don't have virus"..... yeah right. http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ Did a scan, and boy was I suprised!! I wonder if this is why my system would never seemed to reboot all the way, and on shut down, it would never do the "scanning memory" so I could enter the bios. The writer works fine on my old slave of a beast, so I am going to restart and see what happens. Will post back a reply to see if any changes.
If you don't have anti-virus software, you need some. AVG is very good, and it's free. It updates everyday. Get it here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2 Good luck!
