external hard drive not recognized. unplugged.

    My external hard drive worked just fine.
    It got unplugged improperly.
    So I try to plug it back in, and...it doesn't show up.
    I reboot and try to plug it. No show.
    And she beeps and makes funny noises.

    My whole music collection is on this hard drive, can someone please help...quick?

    HD: Hitachi 80GB
    OS: Windows XP sp2

    How did it get unplugged improperly? What was happening?
