    hi
i've got an 300gig external hard drive and seem to be having probs with it.when i try to safely switch it off it comes up with a box on the screen saying.....

The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be stopped right now.Try stopping the device again later.

been trying for over and hour now and still no luck..thought i would restart the computer but might lose the stuff i've transfered over to it....
    what can i do???
    thanx
    gary

Most likely it sounds like something is accessing the drive. Either something you are recording to it is still be written or a program is accessing it. Only way is to find out whats using it and shut it down. See if that solves your problem :>

no. also try doing the shut off of the drive at least a couple of times as i just had that problem on a customer's computer & it allowed me to safely disconnect the drive.
