my samsung external hardrive worked fine one day, and i took it to my friends house, left it in my truck for a day (which was a hot day), and the next day i plugged it into his computer and got no response from it, when i took it home i plugged it into one of my computers and it showed up in MY COMPUTER but when i try to open it, it says drive /f is unreadable or corrupt, and when i put it into my other computer it just freezes it and when i try to reboot with it still in the usb is doesnt go to login screen
thats cause you left it in the sun or some place hot and it probably damaged the inside hardrive ring and corrupted your data the only thing you could do is throw it out cause it ain't gonna work any sooner>>>
Ignore the above post the person has no idea what they're talking about, data can't be damaged by external heat like the sun especially when the hdd is inside a case which is no doubt alluminium, not that ther sun would hurt it anyway as they run @ something like 40-45 degrees, only dropping it from a height or running a strong magnet over the hdd can corrupt it. Best bet is to remove the hdd & place it as a slave inside your comp that way you'll know for sure the data is still intact then if it's ok run a disk check,if you put it back into the case & it still won't be seen or work you then know it's the case, bear in mind the hdd may work at least for a while as those external cases can be fickle
Depends if it's a SATA hdd type which should not need any jumper settings as it's detected automatically when using the 2nd cable located inside the computer, or if it's ATA (IDE) type there will be a picture on the hdd or markings beside the 4 wire connector that has the white female plug, next to that female power array you should see 2 lines of 4 pins totaling 8 pins sometimes only 7,in most cases depending on the make of hdd you don't need any jumper you'll have to check any info on the hdd or the manufacturers website, you'll also have to check that the computers original hdd jumper pin setting is set to master with slave present or just (Master) or if that don't work set both hdd's to cable select this is a link to a seagate ATA normally known as an IDE,unlike the SATA drives, ATA's have a wide grey strip connector of 80 pins in total which resides in the next bay beside the jumper pins,if the 2nd link works at the bott of page it shows an IDE 80 pin connector http://www.seagate.com/images/support/en/us/u5_family_1.gif http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=cbc974850ce0e010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD EDIT: Before moving any jumpers around make a note of where there were before moving them
well i have good news, i didnt have to connect it to the ide cables, i just downloaded a program that got all the things off of the hdd for me, but is the hdd totally dead or could i format it and use it again?
Explain what you mean, are you saying your computer is now detecting the hdd or did you use a linux program to access the drive while it's still in the USB Housing, basicly what program did you use etc. The fact you got the stuff off the hdd means it's still working the question now,do the computer USB's need to be uninstalled then automatically reinstalled on reboot or is the housing at fault i.e some sort of fault that will occasionally throw itself up at you so that the comp will not mount the USB Device or is it a hdd that's about to go AWOL,there's only one way to find out continue using it but get another Ext drive so you have a 2nd copy,(i have backups to my backups on all HDD's internal & external) you can never be too carefull with these fickle devices. Edit: sometimes the comps usb device drivers need to be uninstalled so they can be reset on reboot, sometimes it works sometimes it does'nt,when it does'nt behave as it should when connecting a ext hdd after reinstalling the drivers,i usually remove the hdd install it into the computer run checkdisk, then reinstall back to the housing & it will be ok including detection, sometimes external hdd's are a pain in the ass..lol..
i downloaded getdataback as a torrent so i didnt have to pay for the crap to FULLY work, but my computer recognizes the hdd but when i try to access it, it says D:\ not accessable The file or directory is corrupt or unreadable, also i noticed now when i plug my ipod into the usb my computer freezes, some how i got my computer to not freeze anymore when i plug in the hdd, and i tried the chkdsk under run but the command window pops up then goes away.
Ahhh ok, the same corruption can happen when disconnecting the hdd if write caching is used or the drive was still being accessed while in use, that's when i remove the hdd from the housing & put it inside the comp,it usually corrects the boot table or whatever stuffed up,since you've got the data you need just use disk management inside computer management & reformat it,you'll most probably have to force deletion of the partition first so when disk management says "disk in use do you want to force" click yes, then just go through the motion of reformatting etc
Ok so i formated the hdd and all is working ok now, the hdd doesnt seem to be working like it use to, i think it might have had its own kind of files on it before, but other than that it is fine and i put some files on to it already b/c my computer has a virus i think and i have no idea how to get rid of it, But i just wanna say thanks for the help b/c i had alot of valuable stuff on it
Best bet if you suspect a virus is on your main computer is to do a a full reformat & reinstall, even if you manage to get rid of the bits n pieces of it, the comp just won't work the same, you'll also notice after a reinstall of the OS & your programs the comps responsiveness will be quick,it usually pays to reformat & re-install on a yearly basis, sooner if you tend to install & uninstall a lot of programs for security there's all sorts of freebies comodo or zone alarm for firewall AVG 8.0,Avast,Avira for antivirus & antipyware in one app However nothing beats a fully updated OS which is a must, lastly it would pay to look at purchasing either Symantec Ghost or Acronis, both are pretty much the same it comes down to who you like,i have both & use both, they can either make an image which can be used sorta like a restore point except a far superior way of restoring,or you can do a clone of your hdd to another, best to start with a newly installed OS with only a few programs installed but a fully Updated OS (Install your most used progs first before updating unless .Net2.0 etc is needed) then clone your hdd, simply unplug the 2ndry hdd which will be your backup & if anything goes haywire with the main hdd you have a fully working updated OS ready to go,which can be used to re-image the main hdd, early copies of ghost & acronis a quite cheap Edit: the above is just a suggestion as i've been in a number of situations where a lot of data got lost,if you decide at a later date to get either & you need help use the link below,it's free advice from a crowd that specialise in disk imaging. ps: There's two free versions of imaging software one's called xxclone the other i can't remember but it's an open source one under a GPL lisence http://radified.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl
I did reformat my computer thats why i was glad to get my hdd back up and working, and i have mcafee, and i use ad-aware, ad-aware was the one that told me that i had Win32.Trojan or something like that and i would get random pop-ups of stupid sites (not porn) lol, also windows explorer would restart itself constantaly
Best bet before opening any download is use a virus scanner then a spyware scanner on that file, take a look at these & if you feel like it try em out,me personally i ended up using comodo & avg 8.0,just remember any of that data you retrieved off the external hdd needs to be scanned for any nasties before using them http://www.spywareterminator.com/ http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe
