I want to buy an external harddrive but I dont know what brand, what I should be looking for. I heard I should buy 1 with a fan so that it doesnt overheat and that rpm's matter (for speed)? Can any1 help me with this purchase because I dont know much about it. Thanks.

When you say purchase a HDD of your choice....your talkin about the external harddrive right?

Does the external case have a fan or someway of ventilation?

Whats the purpose of the external case? to protect it? Thanks.

    Thanks wdowsing, exactly. :)

The case does have a fan inside and works great. I have three of them, two with HDD's and one with another burner. I am sure there are others out there as well, but I can only comment on one's that I use and know. As far as a HDD, wdowsing is correct on suggesting an Internal HDD, ATA100/133 with a minimum of 8 to 16MB cache. It goes in the case only one way, and depending on the HDD some like to be hard set to master and others like to be set as single. My Maxtor’s are both set to master.

Can this be setup by oneself (like myself) or do i need a professional to do it?

The only difference between a professional and one such as yourself is one gets paid and one doesn't, one is learning and one has already learned! This is an easy thing to do/learn and if you have any problems, just come back in this thread and we will walk you through it, promise. :)

I want one to store games/videos (from a camcorder) and pictures (from my camera). What do people usually use it for?

What you just mentioned, full backups, in other words, extra storage. :)

Scuba is right extra storage im going to get one myself in the not so distant future to go on my System 2 as am running out of space.

edit: misread the quesiton and gave this response: i would sugesst at least 80gb, but 160gb are that much more expensive nowdays so may just as well go for a 160gb.

    What brand is the best?

They have internal hard drives with 3600, 5400, 7200, 10000, and 15000 rpms. Which one is the best?

I have 2 computers (desktop and laptop). Can I use the external hard drive to save information from both computers. If I can, can I view info from one computer to the other (through the hard drive)

For the external case, should i buy aluminum or plastic?

What is the difference between these 2 cases...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145656 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145657#DetailSpecs (other than the price)

What is firewire in regards to connecting the case to the computer?

All brands have pros and cons, I like Maxtor for basic IDE drives.

7,200 RPM minimum 8-16MB cache minimum

Cases, I like the BYTECC that I showed in a link.

I prefer USB because it is more common then firewire.

Yes, you can move the external between one PC and your Laptop.

    Would you recommend getting firewire?
If I will be using a camcorder/camera, should I get the firewire?

for those purposes, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference (really, it doesn't anyway, under most cirumstances). usb simply guarantees a bit more compatibility.

The camera will not be plugged into the external HDD so it makes no differentce from that respect. USB is more common among PC's so that is why I prefer USB external HDD's.

Is there a big difference between 8mb and 16mb cache?

What are all the different interfaces? What should I be looking for? (I think the 2 main ones are IDE and SATA?)

You should be looking for just what I sent you in a link, an ATA133 IDE, (not SATA,) HDD. The 8 vs 16 cache is your choice, 16 being the better of the two but might not notice much difference since this will be used as a storage external HDD.

whats the difference between IDE ATA 100 and IDE ATA 133?
Actually I will probably get a 300gb hard drive because there is not much of a difference in price.
