I have a friend who is having issues with her HDD. Best buy says that it's at Phase 3 and is going to cost 1200 to fix this. I know that there is a way, could anyone help?
I can add specs. when I get more info.

    ". . . could anyone help? "

Not without knowing more than ". . . having issues with her HDD."

If you don't know enough to have someone explain to you what "Phase 3" is, how can you know it can be fixed?

If I were to guess, this is what they are referring to:

There are 5 phases of disk checking by windows chkdsk. If someone told you this was the problem but could not or would not explain what it meant, then they are just "blowing smoke up your a**".

In the context above, phase 3 is "verifying indexes".

Take it to a reputable computer store ( i.e. not Best Buy) and ask for a second opinion.

they are trying to do a data recovery which involves taking that drive apart & putting the platters into another drive so they can retrieve the information off it.

And if that's true there's no one other than a "clean room" facility that can do it.

I didn't think that Best Buy could spell "data recovery" let alone sub it out to someone.

can be done without a clean room setup but not recommended as i knew somebody that did it a few times.

whatever is on there isn't worth $1200, you could buy a good Raid setup for that. or a Tape Drive so that you always have a backup.
