Fan Connectors on MB possibly blown - will this work

First of all Let me apologize for this long post.

I recently acquired a new board (well new to me anyways).

It has three connectors for 3-wire fans to be connected. Since i plan to get the max out of this sytem i planned to put in all three fans in the case. But the first fan i connected was a big fan that i took from a server with the same three wire connector. When iconnected the fan and powered on the computer the fan spun for about five seconds then stopped. My thought was that the system was not hot and therefore shut off the fan. But when i restarted the cpmputer it didn't come on any at all.

This had happened to me before with this same fan on another system. So in order to test if it was the fan i connected another smaller fan to the connector and it did not spin as well.

And being the (for lack of a better word) "FOOL" that i am, i connected the big fan to another fan connector on the board and it spun for a few seconds and then stopped like the first connector.

So i am relatively sure that the fan is the problem, i assume it dwars too much power and blows a fuse or some other component.


NOW FOR MY QUESTION

is it more likely that a fuse on the power wire is blown than the rpm monitoring on the board.

because i was wondering if i connected the fans 12v lead to another source while the ground and the rpm wire are connected to the board connector; if that would work. Or is the circuitry for the rpm monitoring in the actual fan and not on the board.

you could try using a 3pin to 4pin connector to power the fan from the psu directly but tbh after what its done already i would give to sombody you dont like very much.

 

Thanks ddp, that was what i wanted to know, i've been trying find that out for days.

But i ain't throwing it away, i kinda like marsey99's idea.

But seriously i still used it, it turns out that it was the power was somehow lost. I'm stiill leaning towards a blown fuse or diode. I disconnected the power wire from the fans and connected them to an alternate source of power, and i left the rpm sensing wires and the ground wires connected to the fan connectors and connected them to the board.

And now it works, it even reports the rpm of both fans.
