One of my fans on my motherboard is beginngin to s#*t me up the wall. Its a tiny little thing (less than a 1"x1")with ASUS written on it, and it keeps slowing down and speeding up, making far too much noise for a little fan. What i want to know is, is it safe to stick something in it so it stops working? Or should i take a less hair brained approach and get it fixed? It barely seems to be doing anything when it is working, so do you think it is safe if it isn't running at all. I'm more inclined to leave the piece of plastic there so i can regain some sanity, but not if it will harm the computer.
a fan is there for a reason mate, i would get it fixed to save the motherboard lol. May just need greasing a bit.
the trouble is, i'm living in hong kong, where getting something like that fixed would take about a month (you have to live in an Asian country to truly appreciate what i mean). It seems to be fine so far, i've got shitloads of other fans in there and it seems cool as a fridge in there at the moment, so i'll leave it for a bit longer and maybe take it to a place on the weekend. The fan wasn't doing anything before anyway so its not like its going to heat up like an oven now. But then again, i know little about computers so i should just shut up and cross my fingers that my computer doesn't blow up on me.
its like the cpu fan only smaller, its there to cool the south or north bridge and should be cooling that. Hope it works.
I replaced my ABit northbridge cooler and fan (complete cheap plastic rubbish) with a large aluminum Zalman passive cooler http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Mer...n=PROD&Product_Code=1575ZALM&Category_Code=40 You should too. Remove the half-dead fan if you must (and as much plastic/shroud as you can) but leave the basic cooler on the northbridge chip - if there is good air movement in your case you should be okay. But the cooler itself is probably plastic, and if your case is hot or you require top performance you should replace it ASAP, Regards
