i have a few questions. im a n00b but im trying, so be nice!

i have an .avi that doesnt play in mpc (crashes it or freezes) and has slow video playback in vlc. gspot says i need divx 3 low-motion. so heres the questions:

can i make ffdshow/mpc play this without installing anything more?
should i install divx 3 from the k-lite pack?
or should i convert the video?

(these are the choices i can think of... any better options?)

and a sort of related qustion: what players can i set up ffdshow to work with? when i open mpc ffdshow starts automatically. but not with vlc or windvd. is this because the latter are not compatable with it, or is it because i just havent set it up right...

VLC uses inbuilt decoders. For DivX3 it uses libavcodec, same as ffdshow. Infact most of the libs used are the same. WinDVD, who knows... guess maybe they block 3rd party decoders.

Sounds like there is something wrong with the file if it doesn't playback properly via VLC and crashes ffdshow. Never had any problems here decoding DIV3 via libavcodec.

hmm. well, i ended up installing the codec that *i* thought would do the trick from the k-lite pack. the one i thought would work was the one labelled 'video--divx--mp-4 higher lower' .. it didnt. neither did a standard install of the k-lite pack. BUT- then tired a third time with the option that installs basically everything. now it works in mpc! still not vlc, though. im a little worried about having so many codecs installed now.. but i will wait til it actually becomes a problem.
