    Hi Guys,

Im new here, but VERY enthusiastic and I think im just about getting my head around things.

The reason I write to you is because I value your wisdom on the following. I have a Hi-8 camcorder+ tape all set up ready to capture to my PC.

I understand that the best way to convert from Hi-8 to PC is into the avi.format?

Well I left everything default (using ulead video studio 9), and in the capture....1min of video takes up about 1.1GB!! Yes Ive done it twice.

It looks damn fine but i just dont have the space to do this

My question, what can I do to get a 1hr10min hi-8 vid to AVI in something under 30GB?

If this is not possible, I guess Ill go and buy a second HDD but Im still very uncertain as to the differences and advantages of each output?

Your answers would be really really appreciated.

    Thanks fellas,

    Tuz76

    1) if you want to use avi, make sure the dimensions are correct, ie. dont capture in 640x480 when Hi8 is 320x240

    2) capture in mpeg or wmv again, make sure the dimensions are correct, make sure you are not capturing in wide screen and you should be fine

    3) set up mpeg so that it is recording at a vairiable bit rate of about 2000 kb/second

    4) to access these settings, right click on options and then click on the lower of the 2 that are there, it should be something like "capture pin... or capture settings"

if you cant find it check all the options and all the tabs of each option

Actually Hi8 is Closer to 640x480 than it is to 320x240...Hi8 has about 400 lines of Resolution were VHS has about 240 and DV has 525...

The reason why it is Sucking up about 1.2gb per minute of Video is because you are Captureing to Uncompressed AVI...If you would Like to Keep the Same Quality but have a Much Smaller File Size then install the "HuffYUV" Codec and when you are in your Capture Software configure your Capture settings to capture useing the HuffYUV Codec...Useing this Codec the Quality will be the same as Uncompressed AVI But the File size will be Less than half the Size of Uncompressed AVI.....

    Cheers
