I can watch the film with VLC but when trying to burn or watch with windows player or real i get kicked back to desk top with message saying windows has encountered a problem and needs to close.I have done virus scan and file is clean.

    VLC use it's own codecs...
    So you need to install codecs that other apps can use. Normaly FFDShow and AC3 will do the job.

    If not, use AVIcodec to see what codec you are missing.

    Might be that this will not work, because it might not be explorer.exe error...

    - Start -> Run -> write "regedit" and push enter.
    Go -> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
    If there is "DivX" -> delete it.
    - Then go -> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler\
    And delete value (defeault). It will come back, then you can close regedit and restart your computer.

    If you do not want to play with regedit you can try this:
    - Start -> Run -> write "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and push enter.
    Try to open that folder now.
    (write "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" to get that back)

    EDIT: btw, what codecs you have?
    Too many codecs, or some codec packs can be the problem...
