I am a signer-songwriter who works mostly in the filk (science fiction and fantasy music) genre. I have been working on an album with a lovcal producer, but he has not had any time lately to do any of the arrangements. it's been three months since I've been able to enter the studio and I still have fifteen tracks to lay down. So, I'm thinking of adding a few of the production responsiblities to my portfolio, and also hoping to find some assiatance. I would also like some advice on: 1. Where to find a decent recording package for my Windows XP Home PC. 2. Where to find a decent-quality microphone. 3. How musicians go about the problem of long-distance collaboration (in case I need to deal with people from elsewhere besides where I am). I also have technical questions like: 1. Is it better to lay down a vocal track frist then have an accompaniment put to it or should I always get the accompaniament arranged first? 2. How do you put together a piece of music when other artists are not present but are submitting audio tracks? 3. Is it better to put the mixing of audio tracks recorded at several different locations in the hands of a specialist, or is it something any reasonbly intelligent musician can do to produce decent results?
I would recommend you send a pm to DPaine, I worked with him a couple of months ago, recording vocals for one of his songs. We worked long-distance around (put the distance from Florida to Denmark here) so I would say that it can be done. I wish you the best of luck, I am in kind of the same situaion myself.
