does your camera just become disconnected or "unplugged" from windows? or does it just not come up when you plug it in? if so, try restarting your computer. I have a few old firewire external hard drives that either have to be plugged in before I turn my computer on, or I plug it in then have to restart. Sometimes firewire just gets finicky like that. It is quite a pain in the ass sometimes. Thats why I prefer USB 2.0 No problems like that at all.

yes, its possible the firewire jack in the camera is bad or worn out. do you have another firewire drive or camera to test on your computer.

also, please TURN OFF THE CAPSLOCK. its considered shouting and annoying. thanks!

yes several brands like sony, panasonic, and jvc make miniDV decks, but they cost around $800 and up.
