Firmware and Book Type Settings

This is kind of a shotgun question so please bear with me. I have just learned about booktype settings and the advantages of setting a disk to DVD-ROM. My problem is two fold. I am using a Liteon 1673s burner and tried to use the liteon utility for setting the booktype and the utility froze up solid. I figured that I should try a firmware update, something I try to stay away from, from js02 to js05. needless to say the update failed and nearly caused a total system re-install. A plea for help to liteon was answered by a 5 year old with a crayon. Can anyone help me with the firmware update if I really need it and how to use the booksetting capability.

I don't know what you've got going on but I would start by deleting the f/w update and booktype utility you have now. Then go here http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd rw.asp and download the f/w for your drive somewhere you can find it (C: or my documents). This is the what it should look like.

Follow the directions and click yes. Next you will see this.

Make sure you select the correct target drive and click on update. Yours will be different of course as you have a 1673S.

Next go here http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 and download the lite-on booktype utility. You can also find a usage guide link on that page.

    olddog31--
I recently got the exact same DVD Burner-(Lite-On 1673)and it is great--Mort81 was one of the people that helped me out--I set the burner to burn all DVD's to DVD-Rom and now the burned copies play in any player (Not all DVD+R would work)--This utility is available right on the Lite-On website--I also updated the firmware to the current Version-JS0B which I got from here

    http://www.liteonit.com/ODD/English... rw.asp?Flag=1&Item=DR16JS0B&Model=SHOW-1673S

Good luck, let us know how you make out

My greetings to both of you. I am new on this site and still learning all kinds of things. This BookType thing must be kind of new, very limited information so far. OK, Here we go and what I need to determine. When I went to the Lite-on support site, which looked slightly different than the one your links sent me to, There were the Smart-burn and booktype utilities and the firmware update to take me from jso2 to js05, nothing higher. When I tried the flash, I got the two screens shown below and my drive was detected in the right place. After I started the process, the indicator bar went from 0% to 100% and just above that it said "programming........"
and that is where everything stopped. 15 minutes later with no activity of any kind, I bit the big one and shut down. It was quite a fight to get operational again. When I asked Lite-on about approximate times and ways to abort, they suggested that I try to flash my unit with the current firmware, DUH. I have never seen the current version that is showing on the link that you are showing. I went to the support page directly from the vendor page. Could this be part of the problem? I have no intention of trying another flash until I am sure I can recover without grief.

You say "I got the two screens shown below"--They are not there--
I am not sure what is going on--I would not worry too much about the firmware just yet--But, I do know that there are 2 newer--JS05 then JS07 and the newest is JS0B (June,2005)--
Now, I guess I should have asked this first--Have you ever used the unit successfully before? Are you just trying to update and burn DVD-Rom with the Booktype setting? Maybe someone else--(Mort81)can be more help--lots of people in here--Kinda weird that your actual Lite-On Website shows only older firmware updates--where are you?

Sorry about the confusion when I said the screens below, I was talking about the screen caps from Mort81. I tend to ramble before getting some sleep, you know how us old folks's get. Here is where I went and what I saw, a bit different no? I wonder how many others are getting confused over this particular page? Anyone got an inside track to Lite-on?

    Where I started: http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/index1.htm

I have a lite-on 1633S and a 167T and the link that was given is the only site I have used for firmware update, it is the Taiwan site I believe. The Americas site seems to be two updates behind on the drive. At this point you could try the JSOB and see if that rights the drive, you can also download the booktype utility there.

Glad to meet you arniebear. My origional intention was to take advantage of the booktype setting for DVD-ROM as many have done to keep their disks playable on just about any player. A good idea in my book. I tried that flavor of the Lite-on utility v1.3.5 and that is when the utility froze up. I had thought that a firmware update might be needed for the utility to work right. Looking at the gap between my firmware (jso2) and the current one, I am wondering if I am missing anything or not (besides more media)

    olddog31,

I don't understand the problem you are having. After you click update and it shows progress (light blinks on drive while flashing) you should get a screen that says you must now reboot your pc. Do you want to reboot now?

I would update the f/w before messing with the booktype utility (not that it matters) and like I said previously that link I provided to the booktype utility also has a link to a usage guide.

I have done extensive tinkering and modifying to my drive. It is actually a SOHW-1633S cross flashed with SOHW-1653S led fix f/w (making the led red while burning- the lite-on way instead of sony way). I have also used the eeprom utility to reset my eeprom. This drive is twice as good as it was when I got it.

BTW you can flash your drive over and over, from new f/w to old, from old to new without causing any damage. Always make sure you select the correct drive in the dropdown menu, there are no disc's in the drive and you don't power down during a flash.

Sorry, I may have left something out. When I said there was no activity after the progress (blue) bar reached 100% and just above the progress bar it said "programming......", there was no activity,
No flashing of light on DVD burner
No flashing of light on HDD
No indication of activity on screen (progress bar, Etc.)
No computer activity (mouse, keys, or CTL/ALT/DEL)
I was pretty convinced that my computer was frozen up after 15 minutes of nothing.

I seem to be getting everyone confused by my descriptions, all I wanted to do was find out what happens if it works right. Sorry to waste everyone's time.

Sorry everyone that I kind of went off the deep end there. When not on the computer I work in the retail food industry as a checker and I am getting more stressed out the older I get. Anyway, if I have offended anyone I apologize, I felt that my posts were being glanced over but not being read. I will do better if and when I post again.

    olddog31--
You certainly didn't offend me--we all have bad days. I have been following and posting in this thread simply because I just recently installed the same exact drive that you have--I then updated the firmware and more importantly made it burn DVD-Rom--now my burned disks play in every player that I have tried--Previously, my burned disks would not play in my neighbor's stand alone Sony DVD player--and now they do! Is your drive working alright now?

Thanks for the vote of support. The burner is and has been working fine. I found that I needed to use a better class of media but all in all everything is great so far. I got spooked by the failed firmware update and think that is where I lost my cool. Looking for help and getting a technical triad that if I did understand it I would not need to post here. Maybe I should just install Decryper and bookmark from that route.

    olddog31--
DVD Decripter is a great program and you will like it--unfortunately, it is no longer being updated. As far as making DVD-Rom's using it, that may work, but I think it only will work when Decrypter is used to burn--I may be wrong though--I usually use it to burn anyway, but now any program that I burn with, the disks are DVD-Rom--much easier for me--Just download the first option at this site and then execute the file--done!All your burns will be DVD-Rom--Good Luck

Crappy media will do it every time, glad it is working for you and good luck in your burning.

Thanks everyone. Let me make sure I got this right. Even though my first attempt to upgrade my firmware failed for some unknown reason, I should be ok, and even though I tried using the booktype utility from Lite-on before and my computer froze, I am now using better media so everything is going to be fine. Will Decrypter be able to change the booktype as is? I only intend to use it since that seems to be my only easy option.

I see you also have the LiteOn 1633s burner.
Does the BookType Utility work with that model?
I didn't see a list of supported drives, at the download site, or at the "more info" link.
    Thanks...........

Here ya go JVC. Yes it will work for your drive and I also recommend crossflashing your drive to SOHW-1653S led fix f/w. You can find the crossflash f/w here. http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html CSOP is the f/w.

Here are the firmwares where certain LiteOn drives first started to officially support bitsetting. Any of these firmwares and any firmwares released after them will support bitsetting...

    Code:
    LITE-ON DVD+RW LDW-401S ES0K 2004/02/13 15:52
    LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-411S FS0G 2003/12/17 20:15
    LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-811S HS0J 2003/12/16 14:55
    LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-451S GSB7 2004/01/15 10:53
    LITE-ON DVDRW LDW-851S GS0A 2003/12/15 14:58
    LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-812S US0J 2004/04/14 11:17

All firmwares for all non-slimline drives released
    after the SOHW-812S support bitsetting.

Huh? What is f/w? And what does the crossflashing do?
    Thx............
