Several qestions for the experts out there:

    1. Is there a way to find out if the is a substitute version of my drive's firmware? I am currently using the DL drive that came installed with my HP. It is a [bold]TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532R[/bold]. RPC1 didn't have anything when I copied it into the download database. Is there anyway to determine if the drive is mirrored off another with similar/newer firmware?

    2. I've seen several posts that refer to turning (or enabling) DMA on. How do you do this?

    3. Any idea what it means when the DVD drive continuously tries reading the media? I placed a DL DVD in the drive and it is hanging (the drive light stays on) and DVDDecrypter tells me "Device not ready (Unable to recover TOC)". Any ideas? I'm using Memorex media and from what I've read, it may not be the best choice.

    Thanks for the help.

People have there own unique way of enabling DMA back on, but below is what I do and it works for me. Hey, it won't hurt to try you know.

((((( To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver )))))

    A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
    B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
    C) left click on +sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
    D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
    E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
    F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner’s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the “IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers”

    (A) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
    (B) double left click on either "Primary" or "Secondary" IDE Channel (NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka "Primary IDE Channel" already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the next step.
    (C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

NOTE: To verify your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers with Nero:
Open up "StartSmart", click on "Nero Toolkit", then click on "Nero InfoTool" (InfoTool will run and retrieve all drivers), now click on "Configuration" - this should show you where your DVD Burner/DVD-ROM is installed under either Primary or Secondary <--- make good note of that and you're ready to "uninstall" your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers now.

alkohol,I know that windows XP should automatically hook up those drivers after the uninstall and re-boot. What about Windows 98?

I'm trying to help someone with an issue of pc not recognizing their dvd-rw drive after a firmware update. They also have windows 98 and maybe you got some info that may be different for that OS.

I'm doing this from my laptop. Looks like both the hard drive and the DVD drive are both on the Primary IDE Channel with the DVD drive as the slave (per Nero Toolkit). Will uninstalling the driver cause any type of problem with the hard drive?

Thanks for your help, alkohol. I finally got it to work couldn't enable DMA as your tip suggest. for some reason it would work. I ended up changing the settings through the registry based on the instructions from http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm . I also decided to change media. Memorex sucks. I went to Verbatim.
