Ok, here is my situation. I have a HL-DT-ST GCA-4040n burner. It only burns dvd+r and dvd+rw. Can't figure out the burn speed, but when I check out the prefrences in burn4free I only have two: max and 2x....don't know if that helps. I backed up movies to memorex dvd+r 8x discs. Worked fine on my computer so I know that they at least work. Didn't work on my Coby player. Found out it didn't play dvd+r's. So, got a Sony dvp-ns50p player...info. tells me the +r's shouldn't be a problem. Problem...the player won't read the disc. I have been looking for a firmware update but haven't had a lot of luck. So...suggestions? If it was the firmware needing updated, would it even play on my computer? Is my dvd player being picky with the memorex? I have the burn4free set to close the disc so that shouldn't be the problem. I am open to any suggestions at this point. Thanks to all in advance. jasminec
You can find your firmware here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces If you have Nero, it can automatically booktype those +R discs for you or you may be able to booktype with either DVD Decrypter or Imgburn. I would definately get better media than the Memorex you are currently using, they are garbage. Try some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan).
Your burner only supports two DVD write speeds - 2.4X and 4X. That's an older burner, and the most recent firmware is probably old too. I don't think your DVD player is having a problem with the Memorex media. It's just that your DVD player probably can't play DVD+. You may want to consider upgrading your burner so that you can booktype DVD+ media to DVD-ROM. Try newegg.com for the BenQ burners. They all booktype and would allow you to play your backups in even the oldest DVD player. Check the link below to see supported media for your burner. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=94&Search=Search&list= Look at the feedback at the link above. Most is negative, with one poster saying HP tech support said the drive will only burn at 2.4X. Good luck
Ok, what is booktype? Also, the new dvd player is dvd+r compatible. It says so in the manual and the site afterdawn links to that shows what media "has" been used successfully on which dvd had a review in which someone played a dvd+r worked so I'm really not thinking that is the problem. Perhaps I should try a better quality dvd+r? Should I get x4 speed dvd+r instead? I will try the firmware update....does anyone think that is related to the problem? I didn't do it and my burner still burned the discs successfully and played them (computer only of course). Thanks again.
I just tried installing the c113 firmware udate, but keep getting an error and it closes. It has no problem unzipping, but has problems during the installation. Is there something I'm missing? Not doing right? Thanks again.
Well, I looked up booktype and found out through another link that my dvd burner doesn't support it.....figures. I'm looking for any ideas and suggestions you all have out there. Thanks.
