I have a I/O Magic Internal DVD RW IDE 16X,Dual Format Double Layer(IDVD16DL)(rev.A089)OEM:BTC....I have a Pentium III, 256 memory, 40 G harddrive, Windows XP(hope this is enough info). I have been trying to backup movies with Decryptor/Shrink/(burning with Nero) and everything goes fine until the burn stage, it fails to burn. I tried burning with decryptor...same thing. I just bought 50 pk. of Ridata 8X DVD-R and they burn in my kids computer with the Lite-On burner, and they will playback the movie on mine. So I thought ,Can I upgrade my firmware? I don't know if it can be or even if it can where to find it.I've seen A091 and A190 somewhere but I wanted to get some input before I act so I don't ruin my burner. I e-mailed I/O and have gotten no response. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

That I/O is a rebadged BTC. I/O 16x writers are also made by Benq/Empa/and lite-on that I have seen here at AD.

Here's a link to the firmware updates, but there are many of them,so I don't know which one to go with:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1913

The AO91 fw update is not listed there. I'd use that A091 update if you can find that. You may want to check cdfreaks.com. Lots of fw info there.

Sounds like it is failing during the lead-in phase,so no actual burn took place. Those discs should still be good,if no actual occured.

    Updating is easy,just make sure:
It is the correct fw update for your drive
    No thunderstorms
After downloading the zip file to hard drive, close everything out
Make sure no disc is in the drive
    Open that fw file
follow its directions to the T

Because of I/O outsourcing their drives,it's useless to try their customer support. You can get more help here than you can with them.

Your specs are very limited, but I've got a pc with the p-3 598 mhz/30 gb extra hd/256 mbs rimm and she burns great. I do keep compression down to a minimum by doing main movie only. It's very quick for dvd-5 to dvd-5 backups using dvd decrypter's Mode ISO read and write. More compression/More quality enhancements and you may be looking at a 12 hr backup time, UGGH!
