I have been reading about "firmware" here and there in some post. I recently just purchased a memorex 16x duel layered burner (which now seems like i should of stuck with my orginial purchase of sony 16x duel layer burner but at time was only compatible with xp.) Is it neccassary for me to update this firmare? After going on the site, it said that firmare is only to be used by advanced users. I am looking into making copies of my purchased dvd's and backup of playstation games. Is this a neccassary upgrade I will need?
Firmware is updated for current compatibility/playability. It just helps to update to make sure your burner can read every brand and speed of disc out there. (in a nutshell)
Hi iamhead82. Firmware upgrades typically improve writing strategies and offer support for more media and/or burning software. On rare ocassion major bugs are corrected with firmware. Upgrading your burners firmware should be a painless process. I would recommend upgrading your firmware because it will allow you to get the most out of your burner. Normally each firmware version will be accompanied by release notes. The release notes should tell you what changes have been made in the firmware release.
Manufacturer support for your drive. Since I once owned a Memorex drive, I know they have a support section on the Memorex website. Just search for DVD firmware for your model. Memorex drives are rebadged from the manufacturer. The one I had was a Pioneer. I hear they have since switched sources.

dvdnoobie That's where I meant. Good of you to do the googling for iamhead82. I sometimes forget my manners and let people do some work themselves.
brobear, you are a senior member around here and should not have to do all the work. After all, being an Afterdawn Addict has its perks!
